Home From Week In Borovets...

Well what can i say... i was told this was a ''fantastic resort'' by the travel agent but i didn't see anything that justifies that statement.
The amount of runs open was laughable... yes sure i am fully aware that you can not control the weather, but i have been to places that guarantee slopes are open due to an efficient snowmaking system... i guess Borovets just doesn't have the funding available to put this into practice.
The resort itself.... dirty and slush everywhere. Some very good ...

The resort itself.... dirty and slush everywhere. Some very good bars and restaurants though, nightlife certainly isn't lacking, however there is nothing much else to do besides drinking every evening. As for the people.... friendly for the most part, but the constant hassle and approaches from people trying to get you into their place became VERY annoying by the end of the week.
We booked via. Inghams... the reps were very helpful and informative, no complaints on that front, and we stayed at the Rila and again happy with this place, great variety of food.... beautiful lobby and friendly staff... made the stay somewhat more enjoyable, but as for the resort itself along with the quality of skiing that is available.... very poor and can safely say i won't be returning.
Did take the day trip to Sofia and that was the highlight of our trip.... beautiful city and would be the only thing taking me back to Bulgaria.
Go to the Alps people... as they say you get what you pay for!

re: Home From Week In Borovets...

You comment on "guaranteed slopes due to efficient snowmaking". Snow cannon can only operate when the temperature is below ( I think) -4. Borovets had a bad couple of warm weeks......BUT is by no means alone. I'm watching thee slalom live from Wengen and the snow there even on the championship run is poor. I think you're a tad unfair on Borovets on this point.

"Slush everywhere".same comment, what can you do when the temperature rises?

re: Home From Week In Borovets...

I don't think it's unfair at all, i booked the holiday on the travel agents advice... i was told that January is the coldest month of the year, which is also what it says on the info page on this site.... so to be in 14 degress C of sunshine everyday wasn't exactly what was advertised or sold to me, bottom line it was a waste of my money and i will be paying that bit extra next year to go somewhere better.

Fair report on how you saw it Craig - sorry you didn't have a great time.

I would say however, that the Alps are becoming very very expensive as I found out in Tignes last week. Pretty much any country using the Euro now has become almost a no-go area for anyone on a limited budget.

Cool

if you spend a grand on a trip and feel crap or two and feel good.that is the difference. beat the prices take a back pack up the moutain with your own food and drinks. once you get used to the pack on your back its no problem

Agree with WFM. Travel Agents and some other interested parties will say anything to get you to the resort. When you get there and the conditions are poor you feel cheated before your holiday has even started. I feel sorry for the staff on the ground and the people working there who are trying to make a living out of quite a short season and have to deal with a load of disgruntled holiday makers. Research before you go and hopefully you won't be disappointed. I still don't understand ...

We got friendly with them and never ever had any hassle - if we went in to the bars or not. I get more irritated having the Big issue constantly pushed at me at home. Ah well, hope you find somewhere you can enjoy next year x

re: Home From Week In Borovets...

I get annoyed because if i want to eat or drink something.... i am very much capable of going to get that myself. At 11am when i'm making my way off the slope.... i don't need 4 different guys asking me if i am going into their bar for a beer because they have the best price blah blah blah... i am not going to slate the place completely because i believe the place has some potential. However in the grand scheme of things... you DO get exactly what you pay for, Borovets is priced so cheaply ...

However in the grand scheme of things... you DO get exactly what you pay for, Borovets is priced so cheaply because it doesn't offer high a high quality product.... people say that the Alps are expensive... yes they are but they are near on faultless in terms of piste conditions and snow/snowmaking.... in food, accommodation and facilities... far superior... again i am not immediately knocking Borovets for this, but it's clear that if they want to become a top destination and stop giving people such negative opinions they need to make drastic improvements all around.

I went there 3 years ago and was bitterly disappointed.... i came back last week after reading reviews and articles about how improvements and upgrades have been made.... yet i have to say i didn't see anything and i will not be returning, i will pay that little bit extra and head to the Alps where i can safely say have been faultless on every visit i have been to.
