HiI'm planning to go somewhere in the mountains, but not primarily to ski, although would consider that too, if need be. My aim is to reach a peak by walk with the help of local guides. Am i talking madness if I say I would like to do this towards the end of December? I've never been to this part of the world, and I've always did my mountaineering after the ski season. Your comments are highly appreciated. Thanks

its very possible to walk to the top of mussala, as long as you know what you are doing. There is a weather station on top, and i believe they do 'accomodation' there. We have skied from as far up as you can get, its about another 20 mins walk from where we get to with a pistebasher, and weve passed loads of walkers throughout the season, its very popular.re: How possible it is to reach peak Vihren or Musala towards end December?

Mussala is easier that Vihren in the winter and

there is a weather station on top but not accomodation!
It has never been and wont be.
only possible to stretch/sleep primitively at Ledenoto ezero(the Ice lake ) but with advance booking over mobile phone only.
Crampons,snow shoes, rope and other mountain gear nessessary.
Maybe in the future there will be possibility so sleep at Mussala lake where they are finishing something which was started many years ago -building tourist ...

Every reasonable and regular climber will approach the hut from the path at the bottom of the valley and then at the end, above the Ice Lake -on the winter ridge only(metal rope to hold on to)
Allow enough time for going back though.

have to disagree though, although not officially advertised as accomodation available up top, it can be done i know people whove stayed there, same old same old, money speaks.
The hotel they re started by the Mussala Hut has been stopped again as its totaly illegal, so that should put back completion by oh say a year or so!!
