re: How possible it is to reach peak Vihren or Musala towards end December?
Hey Etienne,
I think theres no chance to do it at one day in winter to mussala peak, you have to get the gondola or have to try to get a stay in one of the huts near mussala peak. But the walk isn't as nice as 5 years ago, because the summer hiking path is in the winter a ski run.
You can walk up to Mussala Hut or Chakar Voivoda Hut in winter without a problem with snow shoes or shoe chains and if you are in good condition you need to chakar voivoda and back 4,5 to 5,5 hour. To Mussala ...

Hi Etienne,
don't go this weekend, it going to be minus 30c.
In december ( and Jan.) it can also be very cold ( specially upstairs ), so get yourself well informed about the weather.

It's not just the weather it is the time. You have not enough light to find the way for Mussala path way. Even if you start at 7 in the morning you have not 10 hours to be back. I walk a lot of tours over several years in the Borovez area it is lifetaking.
And it is much easier as in former years if you have to walk trough 80 and more cm deep snow, amd see no one for hours. But you can't do it in this time and without a little secure of time...
Have a great time over there but don't ...

Have a great time over there but don't forget the weather in the valley couldt be nice and sunny, in the middle may be some snow, ten minutes later sunshine again on the pass heavy snowfalls 6 to 6 beaufor -20°. And anytime the risk of avalanches especially in Mussala area.
Last year two weeks ago, I'm up to the hut, the man who runned the Mussala Hut was killed by an avalanche and he runed the hut 20 years...
