Info wanted.

We are flying into Sofia at the end of June for our usual 3week stay in the Sunny Beach area. We have decided to spend a few days travelling to the coast as we want to visit the Rila Monestery.
Where else would you recommend to visit in the area ? Is it worth going to Bansko and Boro in the Summer?
If so where is a good place to stop for one night? We have already been to Pamps, Devin and Plovdiv etc. I look forward to your suggestions.

Thanks Phil. I am a regular on the other side, just thought that the posters on here would be more familiar with the mountain regions!

re: Info wanted.

Both Bansko and Boro could be reasonable bases if you are intending to visit places around them. Melnik is nice, very traditional, wine tasting and local foods, the mountains themselves just for the views, it depends what you are looking for really....

Recommend you contact James at the Avalon Hotel in Bansko. Very knowledgeable of the the surrounding area and a very nice hotel as well.

After visiting the Rila Monestry why not cut across country to lake Batak, then head over to the Devils throat caves near Devin heading upto Shiroka Luka and stoikite. You could then head towards Kurdjali through the rodopes and onto the Black sea. Wink

Rila monastry is really nice the road starts very straight for miles on end then you get into the mountains stunnng views and when you still think you have missed it there it is.
I think the chap who first set up the monastry walked from there down to the villae every day - on the road its a good 14km (or miles I forget) and the terran is very rough to walk.

Melnik is a really nice place to go - incredibly cheap and the temp difference between Bansko & Melnik is incredible Bansko is a hot heat Melnik is exceptionally humid.

How about going to see the Bear Sanctuary thats ast of Bansko. Its one hell of a walk up the hill but its such a great place to go. When we went in Aug it was heavy rain on that day but we saw I think 16 bears usually on a hot day they hide away. We saw them play fighting running bellowing amazing. It is free too but of course you can donate to the charity - these are the Dancing bears taken from the travelling folk. It is sad to see the pics o what has happened to many and you can see the physical & mental scare on these bears its very moving if you have a chance do it.

7 Lake walk in Bansko - thats up the mountain not sue how long it takes but its stunning.

I would certainly recommend a day or 2 in Veliko Tarnovo on the way over to Sunny Beach. It wouldnt be too far off the route between Sofia and Sunny Beach. The medieval capital of Bulgaria. Plovdiv is also a pleasent stop over
