I havent been to Bansko - but if its anything like Pamps - its absolutly fine - Obviously as with all countries you need to be careful - But I didnt feel scared once! The people are really nice and there seems to be a real sense of community spirit.

re: Is it Safe?

I have been going to Bansko for a few years now and can assure you that walking around and visiting the various restaurants (mehanas) and bars are perfectly safe.

Know what you mean. Pamporovo and Borovets are purpose built ski resorts with lots of tourists walking around. Went to Bansko for the first time this year and found it a bit eerie and quiet, particularly in the old town. Had no problems though and was only approached by people advertising their tavernas. Warm welcome as always and things will be even better when the development stops and the centre becomes more busy.

re: Is it Safe?

Do you feel a bit more uneasy surounded by locals as opposed to tourists?

re: Is it Safe?

Bansko is a rather lovely middle European small town, with a church that is really worth visiting, it feels very Eastern Orthodox.
Anyone with some time to spare(!) in Pamporovo might like to bus down to Plovdiv. The new town is undistinguished at best, but it also boasts a very pretty old town, and a stunning Roman amphitheatre.
The Rila Monastery Is accessible from all resorts I think, although I haven't been there. Sofia is also worth a visit for the Sunday market and the cathedrals ...

All should be safe, but like anywhere else, there are no guarantees.
You're going to an interesting country at an interesting point in its history. Enjoy.

re: Is it Safe?

The only time I felt uneasy was about 2.30 in the morning trying to get a taxi, but I was very drunk and did wind a couple of taxi drivers up over the fares they charged, my fault i think

re: Is it Safe?

good questions as Bansko is pretty bizarre after dark in that there's very little street lighting & generally very very quiet; bars and restaurants are dimly lit outside and you find plenty of pot-holes to trip on if your not careful, I'd seriously recomend taking a small torch
