re: Just back from Borovets- full report as promised!
i to think one week out of shool is certainly no big deal so get your own life, and keep your noise out of other peoples business. education is not just sittiing in a classroom

Look back, I am Me Pat! I get very vexed by people talking about development and seeing children missing school- I am a teacher so have a vested interest; along with this I did a major part of my masters looking at disruptive attendance patterns for children and as I say the research is there to be seen. I am not saying anyone is a bad parent probably the ridiculous prices the companies charge during school breaks is main cause for concern or the tour companies who put on kid’s clubs, most parents are not bad parents just ill informed or not doing the right thing. Parents come to my school and say but it will be great for Johnny to experience this or that but a weeks skiing or package tour by a pool during the summer really isn’t on my friends.
Last summer my class had three children out for an early holiday I can tell you that they are the children that have books sent home and only get read to a couple of times a week and there is always an excuse why they haven’t completed this piece of work with their parents. Please don’t have a go for me telling you what I see, I would not have commented if Ian hadn’t said I like to see them develop!

Welcome back Ian.
Enjoyed reading your report. Shame about the kids instructor - did you try asking for another?
Pat - thought your last remark rather condescending. I too am a teacher (SENCO) and fell there is another side to that as there is also research to show that children with a wider experience of the world and life, absorb new concepts more readily. I think that spending one week a year, exercising in mountain air and having quality time with parents (who may struggle to take a family away in peak times) will enhance rather than detract from schooling. I would however not agree to children in crucial examination years ie year 10 and 11 missing school time.

Sorry to have started so much fuss
I am not saying Ian is a bad parent just ill informed and thinking about his bank balance rather than the future of his kids? But if that’s what you like to do go on and knock yourself out, but I think others who read this and take their children out during the school holidays (Ian the clue is in the name school holidays) realise the extra money is a price well worth paying.

Hi borogirl- No, never asked for another instructor for the little one as he was quite enjoying just "bommbing" as he puts it down the slopes! Did mention to the boss however how others felt like- perhaps he was having a bad week or whatever?

Pat- I would never take the kids out of school around exam time- but i and their teachers agree they are learning something that is beneficial for so may reasons- thats the reason the school takes the trips away during term time- it is very educational for so may reasons, and the kids know they have to keep up a good attendance record to get the ok to do so!
My kids have good reports and allways have home work in on time, have a good understanding of other cultures and can both ski difficult red runs fast- can you?

Pat, we have 5 children and did take them out of school a few times for holidays - we couldn't have afforded to go otherwise. We had some fantastic times together as a family, and they all have wonderful memories which they still talk about now (the eldest is 32 this year).
I'm now a teacher myself. My school (secondary) takes a dim view on taking kids out for holidays - parents are likely to be fined if they do it. I try to keep an open mind
though because I honestly believe that ...

though because I honestly believe that families can benefit hugely from quality time together in a new environment, and the price hikes during school hols mean that a lot of families simply cannot afford this option.
