We did Sauze d'oulx this time last year, stayed HB in 3 star hotel, I would give it a half star, due to it being cold, miserable, poor food, no ski/boot room, no pool etc, for less money we have just enjoyed the kempinski hotel, a good 4 star+ in Bansko, we drank more in Bansko, took taxis up the mountain twice yet spent less money on the total holiday cost for the same sort or resort, if anything Bansko is better, the only plus point for Italy was splendid mountain restaurants with good ...

I don't believe you get the same high standard of accommodation in Italy for the same price. We found the atmosphere in Bulgaria to be far nicer.

You cannot compare Italian skiing to Bulgarian, Italy : more pistes in resort, better food and snow record, higher and more snow sure pistes, much longer season, day to day costs (lunch , coffee less than Bulgaria)

KR, I have compared Italy to Bansko, done Italy twice, Bansko 3 times in the last few years, better snow conditions each time in Bansko all at same times of the year March and first week Feb, so perhaps I can compare the two with a tiny bit of knowledge. No doubt about it, cheaper in Bansko for very similar holiday, I must add we are snowboarders if you want lengthy motorway skiing perhaps italy would be more suitable but for us, better off piste/freeride in Bansko. Very Happy

Lots of tree lined pistes in Italy... interestingly you mention March and Feb in Bulgaria, try skiing Bulgaria before end Jan or April and you may find hiking is more in order

I like both countries to ski in, but lets be honest skiing much better in Italy, check out this sites forum in Jan for Bulgarian conditions

KR, fine don't take the risk of poor snow record for Jan and April? do you really expect to ski at such low levels in these months, early Jan and I go to the soulless, expensive resort of Obergurgl to guarantee snow. I know very little about skiing in either country as a snowboarder, still prefer Bansko.

re: Just got back from Italy - Go Compare!

I used to think Bulgaria good value, not anymore long q's for Gondola, bar rip off prices, long flight and transfer, skiing not an option in Jan - snow sure, then in most other parts of Europe. Pamps and Bulgaria does have a charm about it, but that charm is negated by pooor snow (its good at moment, but this is the first time this season) and bad management of its infrastrucure.

I will say the tuition is first rate and friendly

I found Italian prices much the same as Bulgaria and much better infrastrucure and snow record...check this forum for PP's review of Sestiere
