Just got back

We just got back from Pamporovo Crying Although we managed to ski for 5 days the conditions were terrible. I think I am now an expert skiing on gravel and grass! Looking at the webcam today I am really jealous everything looks lovely again.
My one critisism is that the mountain should not have remained open. There were 6 casualities in 2 days which was purely because of the condition of the slopes. A lot of people were complaining to the rep saying it wasn't safe to ski. She took the area ...

My one critisism is that the mountain should not have remained open. There were 6 casualities in 2 days which was purely because of the condition of the slopes. A lot of people were complaining to the rep saying it wasn't safe to ski. She took the area manager up to take a look but she deemed it safe to ski. Im not one to complain as it ruins your holiday but people did have a point. Im in the Health and Safety business (Solicitor) so I do understand their concerns. Anyway, apart from that I still love Bulgaria and I am now looking forward to February, hoping and praying for good snow so I can enjoy lovely Pamporovo. Smile

re: Just got back

A real shame for you Karen and I echo all your comments.
Sounds as if you made the best of a bad situation and credit to you for doing just that.
We will be in Pamporovo on 6th Feb - so hopefully we'll meet you there.

re: Just got back

You have to make the best of it or else you become bitter and twisted LOL. We haven't booked yet Pete, we are going to wait until a few days before so we can see what the snow is like. I think we will look around 14 Feb.
Lots of people coming down the wall last week. Crazy mad people I may add. I would have killed myself it was pure ice and grass patches Smile

On the coach yesterday there were a group of guys sounding off "glad to leave this dumpetc etc" I wanted to say something but I bit my tongue. Its not Bulgarias fault the temps hit 10 degrees! Then they were moaning about the food and the bell men. Mad Why do people come to eastern europe expecting Benidorm style english food. Sad eh. See you Pete

Health and Safety Solicitor! I bet you were handing out your business cards!!

If conditions were bad, people do not have to ski! I don't suppose anyone was dragging them to the slopes screaming! At the end of the day it does come down to the common sense of the indvidual.

Bob how cynical! I didn't even mention my employment I wasn't interested. I was there to enjoy the holiday which I did. I don't take work away with me. For the record I am a defence Lawyer so I am on the other side!
People were not kicking and screaming but the less experienced skiers didn't appreciate how dangerous it was. If people choose to accept the risk and have an accident then they are the author of there own misfortune and negligence is contributory.

re: Just got back

Bob - that's a bit harsh.

Nobody knows at base level what the runs are like. If the lifts are running then you would assume that the runs had been checked and deemed safe. It's not until you would disembark the lift and begin to ski that you would find out the true conditions.

The pressure on the resort management is enormous and wrong decisions are often made for what they would consider to be the right reasons.

Insurance claims, mountain restaurant takings, instructors wages, ...

Insurance claims, mountain restaurant takings, instructors wages, people complaining it's shut against people complaining it's open - it's a no win situation.

I would say advice should be given to ALL people accessing the lifts on what conditions are like at the top - then it is up to them to decide whether to ski or not after having been made fully aware of what to expect.
