Just got back from Borovets, stayed at the Samakov, not bad hotel, didnt really eat their food since it was so cheap to go out. Kateys steak house was much recomended here but generally not considered good at all. Their steaks were very tough, a comment we heard muttered on more then one table... Exchange rate in the Samakov worked out at 2.65 to the £, but checked on the rate including charges on cash i pulled out a cashpoint and it was marginally better, so i'd probably do that in the ...

Piste conditions were not good, with many sloped covered in rocks and pebbles, generally shredding boards, fresh snow falls helped a bit, but very little in the way of piste grooming going on.
Nightlife was surprisingly limited, with Buzz really being the only place, and pretty dead after 1/2am on all nights except the last night. Also probably not worth ordering spirits during the happy hour, since they were all pretty heavily watered down.
Also rather a lot of strip clubs all seemingly called Playboy. We were a group of guys so rather a lot of people wanting us to go in, also a few beggars asking for cash.
If you take the Gondola to the top DONT EAT at the the restaurant there, since they will rob you blind -we were the only group not given a receipt and just told a fat price for a bill which we only thought about when ordering a 3 course meal later on in the evening which was the same price as our snack....
Badly marked pistes, if on the Rila side you see a slight off shoot DONT take it, leads to the skidoo trail and a 3 hour walk (rescued by some skidoos thank god...)
I would just like to say i returned from borovets too. and had a wicked time!!! and am definatly going back there next year. I strongly recommend it!!!
Mamachitas mexican is the place to be... 3 tequillas
The man is talking tosh..... I've just boarded solid for 6 days in Borovets, on virtually ever slope (both mountains) & all I came across was lovely, powdery snow.
For the 7 days I was there it snowed 5 out of the 7....... not sure where this fella skied but It can't have been Borovets.
Dont think Aceman thought it was really up to much did he?
It would appear he is the minority though!
There again if he found all them rocks (and no one else did), hows that stand the rest of his report?
Didnt say he did not have a good time though, so cant all have been dissapionting.
The conditions at boro last week were as perfect as you will ever get according to a senior instructor. I was there and it was ace and there were no uncovered rocks anywhere.
Someone is telling porkies.
i returned on saturday and i saw no rocks on the piste.
i have skiied all over europe, and i have to say that i expereinced some of the best ski conditions i have ever had. nearly every day was a powder day at the top gondola station.
it is true that the restauranrs at the top of the station are more expensive than those at the bottom, but in comparison to other european resorts it is still cheaper. eg bonkers bar by the top gondola station, chicken fillet and chips and a bottle of ...

it is true that the restauranrs at the top of the station are more expensive than those at the bottom, but in comparison to other european resorts it is still cheaper. eg bonkers bar by the top gondola station, chicken fillet and chips and a bottle of water = 16 lev, which is roughly £5-£6. you try getting even a can of coke and a packet of crisps for that in france of italy and you would have no chance.
i also disagree about katys steakhouse. i went there twice and had a superb meal both times.
don't get me wrong, i am not a bulgarian skiing 'cheerleader' but I must say for the price I paid for the trip, myself and my partner had a superb time. I will be going to USA/Canada next year, but will definintely return to Bulgaria at some point in the future.
