couldn't agree more on the slopes conditions... Unbelievable to see such badly groomed pistes with so much snow falling almost everyday last week. Between the icy patches, the 'grassy' ones and quite big rocks (the red slopes going down from the Yastrevets chairlift), I'm really happy I didn't bring my own board! couldn't agree more on the slopes conditions... Unbelievable to see such badly groomed pistes with so much snow falling almost everyday last week. Between the icy patches, the 'grassy' ones and quite big rocks (the red slopes going down from the Yastrevets chairlift), I'm really happy I didn't bring my own board! Most of the drag lifts are unfitted for boarders (the poles are not 'bended' and you end up with quite large bruises on you inner thighs...), the arrival of one of the chairlifts in front of Rila hotel is left as icy and rock hard as can be (not a nice experience when a fellow boarder or skier misses the arrival and makes you fall...) and all of the slopes going down from the gondola end up as flat as Belgium (I know, that's were I'm from Smile ), which is once again very unpleasant for boarders.
I keep reading bad reports about boarders but I have to say that I found the skiers most appalling in Borovets. No consideration at all for each other or anybody else on the pistes (especially on the lower parts of the pistes close to Rila hotel, where so-called 'experienced' skiers - certainly not the word that comes to mind judging on their level of control over their skis...- rush down the mountain and don't have a clue about priority rules).
Now that was the downside, and being used to skiing in France, I have to say the difference was huge (I forgot to mention that the slopes are not signalised - up to you to find your way guess whether that corridor between tree is a piste or not...) and I never felt serene on the slopes.
On the other hand, anything 'après-ski' was just lovely. Very nice atmosphere in the village, lovely locals, good food for no big bucks.
It was our first time in Bulgaria but as our main interest was the skiing (actually the boarding Smile ), I don't think we'll go back, or at least not to Borovets.
No regrets though, but better know what you're going there for!
