Cheers for your comment Pete. I see from this board that you've been going to Pamporovo for a while. I have been to Pamporovo( me, wife & 2 kids went, best hol ever) and would recommend it to anyone, including families. All of us felt perfectly safe at all times, never a hint of trouble. Winterwonderland incarnate.
Sorry if the question sounded overly dramatic but I had read posts about people who had been to Borovets last year and complained on scammers trying to do a currency scam, mafia bodyguards wandering round the hotels (armed) etc etc.
I did assume it was somewhat exaggerated but never hurts to ask!!!!
both resorts do have mafia envolvment but nothing major to worry about.the only problem i had was when i changed money in one of the booths.they had one rate on the outside and a different one inside.
when i started to make a fuss i was greeted by two heavies at the door.decided to make a tacticle retreat and learn the lesson.change your money at the bank or hotel.
As steve r says above, do not use the money exchange booths!!!!!!!
I also heard all the rumours and asked the same questions last year, But as the group of us that was going were from Hull it was decided they were more scared of us
Only saw a couple of heavys and they were freindly, had a few drinks with them in the bar anyway, they were obviously having the night off.....didn't see them pay for any drinks though
The place makes France seem as unfriendly as it really is, ...

The place makes France seem as unfriendly as it really is, Everyone is helpful and easy going, Just chill, enjoy your holiday,
Just watch out for the Bulgarian Yeti (Yetski), Its 8 foot tall, long white hair and wears a wooly hat and always carries a bottle of Kamenitza around, he aint so friendly, but you are more likely to see him than the Mafia.
The bulgarian mafia are known as the Bortsi, which means fighter. They are identifiable by their lack of a neck and the black puffer jackets. However, I have never seen any in Borovets, apart from around the strip clubs. Have never had any hastle and would agree with other posts that people in and around the resort are all really friendly (in general).
Nothing wrong with exchange booths, just a question of finding the right one. Tip: Exchange £10 see what you get back. The most you are going to lose is 50p or so. If ok, repeat for required funds.
As PP says, Mafia are there but wont bother you. They already know who pays there income, ie us!
