Minus 12 degrees

Eek - we're off on Saturday to Val Thorens in the Alps and the top temp there is minus 10 wind chill factor minus 22.Having only ever skiied before in Bulgaria in a heat wave I'm seriously concerned about what else we might need in terms of more layers.Has anyone any helpful suggestions?

You'll be surprised actually. Just an extra layer or two will make a big difference, no need to go mad. I would have thought that thermal top and bottoms to be worn if needed, would do. Once you are skiing, you will soon warm up.

One thing you should definately take though, is more money!

I'm serious, particularly if you are going to stop in a mountain cafe and warm up.

take some thermals in case but as above extra layers also you can buy discs that you bend and they heat up really good if its very cold. hope your at least half board, look out for early specials in the bars, you will notice a huge diffence in the prices so take plenty of cash.

For me at that temp, it's my hands and ears that freeze, you will need good gloves, and hand silk liners (from motorbike shops) work for me, I feel a lot warmer wearing a helmet with ear flaps and a scarf for the gaps, I have worn a motorbike style face mask with vents does the job. Keep warm and enjoy, just think it will be worth every penny, a top resort. Booze

Many thanks for all that really good advice.I've stopped running around the house like a headless chicken thinking we're all going to die of exposure!
So just how expense is it?
We've done it on the cheap £880 for a catered chalet for 4 of us and about another £500 for ski hire & passes.
We're planning on stuffing our pockets with ceral bars & nut for lunch times to try and keep expenses low.Reckoned as we don't have so many hours of daylight that'd keep us going until the tea & cake ...

depends on how much you drink, plus side if you are in a chalet usually includes wine with the meal, mates were in that area three years ago, they are big drinkers and spend over £600 on food on slopes and drinks at night, that was two of them. you could be looking at £5 a pint or over, often though early on the bars have two for one. you will easily get ride of £40 a day on the slopes thats why most people eat loads at breakfast and stick to soup, at lunch time. ski area is fantastic ...

where did you get that deal through ski passes are usually about £170 each so to get the chalet and all the stuff for that is one hell off a deal. I take it its a late booking. but even so the passes are worth more than you have paid. the only reason I ask is we are looking to book around that area a bit later in the season thats all

re: Minus 12 degrees

It is not difficult to find deals for the same price as going to Borovets anywhere in the Alps.Only difference is the slopes are longer and longer and longer and the queues are difficult to find and the snow -well take a guess.
Bravo Ali good choice.Eye opener
