Interesting findings Mike f. It is always useful to receive different people's opinions and this seems to have stirred up a few comments!
In terms of the locals away from the 'tourist tours' spitting at you, that would probably be the result of the former state of the country and the fact that a lot of it, as you have found out, remains as bad as it ever has done despite the tourist areas being modernised and well equipped.
I expect the poorer people who have been injusticed feel ...

I expect the poorer people who have been injusticed feel unduky towards rich foreigners visiting their country while they remain in hardship & poverty. Its sad that that has happened to you on your holiday but that is the way some people are.
To be honest though, going through quite a few places in the UK we are all likely to encounter these types of scenarios or worse.
