I live within sight of the proposed runway south of Bansko. Old tarmac strip, no buildings or anything else, not even a light. No one round here believes it will ever be used as an airport.

Listen to Bulgarianlily....
The economics of opening an airport, an international airport at that don`t add up. I cannot imagine an international carrier (wizz, easyjet etc) picking up a route with so few passengers. If it was the case that it was a feeder type airport that took shuttles from Sofia or Plovdiv then i suppose that is feasible, but by the time you have unloaded from one plane to another with security and everything, you just as well drive from Sofia.

The road from Bansko via Simitli along the E79 is a very good road, the short section around Dupnitsa could do with some work, but overall its good. The problem is Sofia, Zsar Boris is a nightmare, the road surface is breaking up, and sections linking the new parts of the ring road are the same. Potholes abound that will tear your suspension off. Add to this intimidating BG drivers who are hellbent on overtaking/undertaking who virtually push you across the road then it makes for an interesting journey. I long for the new flyover into Sofia from the E79, for the ringroad to be complete, and then the 2 hour transfer will be easily achievable...

From here near Gotse Delchev, we drive up towards Bansko, take the Elishnitza turn to cut off a corner, then go via Yondula and Belovo, pick up the E80 motorway north of the Rila mountians and drive straight round to the airport. All this to avoid some 10 kilometers of Sofia non existant ring road. When that is complete, life will be a lot better! Of if we go via Blagoevgrad then we can stop at Metro which is a bonus, but then Belovo is the toilet paper capital of Bulgaria, so we can always ...

re: New Bansko Airport - Is it going to happen?

Have gone that way, my bus full of passengers falls foul on some sections due to the poor road surface, and the descent through the gorge can be a problem especially if caught behind a log lorry. I have been going via Samokov from Dupnitsa, about 20km further compared to E79 but even that road can suffer with the weather (ice !!) and the drive past the lakes can be slow if caught behind a lorry. One day it will be ok, im just hoping i will be young enough to benefit Cool
