If you shrug your shoulders it means "don't know" works with the police, not sure if it will work with Mafia if you find them.
Otherwise Bulgarian is the chosen language of the locals but they will stretch to some English

You don't want to speak Russian anyway....it does stop them trying to rip you off in the odd restaurant if you can read their bills ( its similar) but otherwise its better to be thought of as a Brit. I have used Russian in Borovets only to have to take time to convince people that I am a Brit after all. Smile and look innocent is my advice; the locals are a great laugh and I have never seen Mafiosi in Borovets before.
Roll on Christmas; I'm orf to Pamps this time. Can't WAIT!
