re: Not skiing but.....

Know what you mean, have not really been to London much, maybe only five or six times in my life. Was there quite recently though to see a barrister near to the high courts, had quite a few in an Australian bar on the embankment after the meeting, prices about the same as here in Torquay, appreciate that our town centre is quite touristy so prices tend to be higher, say £2.85 for a pint of lager.

All is not rosy, high house prices, high cost of living, high water rates, and unfortunately very low wages generally...

Well if you're in London again and have any spare time give me a shout. I don't mind working up here but wouldn't live here again. I did once back in my youth but not now. Sounds like beer prices in Torquay are high too. We pay around £2.65 a pint locally. House prices are high though in the Tonbridge area. With water rates we get a great deal because our cottage is on what used to be a large private estate with many of the houses still owned by the estate and rented out although we own ours ...

Sounds like beer prices in Torquay are high too. We pay around £2.65 a pint locally. House prices are high though in the Tonbridge area. With water rates we get a great deal because our cottage is on what used to be a large private estate with many of the houses still owned by the estate and rented out although we own ours. The water is supplied by the estate and we currently pay £45 a half year. For sewage we have a cesstank for us and the cottage next door and it requires emptying once every 2 years at a cost of £100. So that part is cheap at least.

The area used to be widely used for hop growing and many of the local pubs reflect this in old photos etc. Our local is no exception and is very old with low beams and an inglenook fireplace etc Unfortunately the Kent hop trade has now died with fewer and fewer hop fields. Imported hops are cheaper. But there you go this country usually gets it wrong so no surprise there........

re: Not skiing but.....

very good but the fact about qantas is wrong, they have had a an accident but not a crash. Now their stapline is we've never lost an aircraft.

One of their planes had a problem on landing smashed through the end of the runway, then the highway past that and skidded to a halt on the neighbouring golf course.

It was shown on the news with a picture of the plane's nose resting on one of the greens....obviously much to the dismay of the members !

Personally I think the greenskeeper should have got double time to sort the mess out.....the nose cone of a jumbo jet on the greens !
