How much I wholeheartedly agree with you Kate. I was there with my family earlier this year and the restaurants on the slopes were terrible. Eating when a smoker is sat at the same table puffing away and blowing it in your face and over your kids and food is unacceptable. We just froze outside for the sake of the children. One is asthmatic and it took her weeks to get over the effects.
It was not just the Bulgarians smoking it was all nationalities.

Skiing is a family activity and those who do smoke should have the decency to respect those who don't. It is an anti-social habit and the sooner the Bulgarians ban it the better.
I don't want to passive smoke and I certainly don't want my children to either.

No desrespect here, if your kids are asthmatic, is it not possible that the altitude was the problem, change of air etc or possibly the log fires in the restaurants, i have enjoyed many a holiday with my family and love to be close to an open fire logs burning etc cough sometimes at the fumes but all part of the experience

Wrong - its a tourist area so I'm presuming that they want our money, so they should create an environment welcoming to (the majority of) us. And as they don't know what that is, they need to be educated so that they can create an environment that will encourage us to return and give them our money.

Its not patronising or imposing, its educational. If you wanted to make money from Chinese tourists in England you'd want to create an environment that Chinese people liked. Not feed them ...

I'm rambling.

My thoughts exactly. A lot of ski resorts are in countries that have smoking bans. Bulgaria is already at the lower end of the spectrum for skiing. They need to do anything they can to improve things for skiers if they want to attract people away from the mainstream skiing areas.

I thought tourism was about sampling different cultures and environments, not about creating mini Englands all over the world. If that's the case why don't we just stay at home.
As for smoking bans they are in place in Spain but try and find a bar that up holds this!
