Pamporovo - take a torch!

Just got back to EMA.....

The electricity supply has been lousy all week with power cuts for hours in some parts of the resort and most areas affected at regular intervals. Some hotels had no power Xmas night.

The lifts have been badly hit - only managed to get to the top twice on Wednesday and was stuck on loads of lift journeys on Thursday and Friday (up to half an hour).

The resort was closed until Wednesday but loads of snow fell Tuesday to Thursday. We were told that the wrong type of snow fell on Tuesday and this has led to the electricity problems :-)

Pamps has changed since the last time there (8 years ago) - new hotels and restaurants but the lift system is looking very tired and the ski hire gear (Balkan Tours) was very poor unless you made a fuss - so don't let them give you junk!!

No problems with cash - there are at least 3 ATMs that work fine.

re: Pamporovo - take a torch!

borovets had some minor power interruptions druing the same period, but nowhere near as bad , worst was about 15 mins but a torch would have been nice, i heard that people were being bussed across to borovets from pamp, but never saw it , was that true

re: Pamporovo - take a torch!

Hope it's OK when we go in a few weeks. Been to Pamps for the last 2 years and havn't had electric problems, but I will take the advice about a torch.

Pamparova Pete said that the Ski equipment was new this year! Perhaps not all of it! Last year we had to swap round a bit, but didn't have too much of a problem.

re: Pamporovo - take a torch!

During the last week I don't think that anyone was bussed out.

The ski school kept us entertained with some walks for the first few days without sufficient snow.

I'd give the bus trip to Smolyan a miss though, we couldn't find much of interest there at all (tho' I would like to be proved wrong!)

Thanks for the tip going in 7 days. Just to clarify what equipment was knackered and where was it from?

re: Pamporovo - take a torch!

Boots - very well worn.
Adjusting straps didn't work over top of the foot and even had one lever missing.
Ski instructor advised replacement which was done but the ski equipment engineers didn't bother to adjust the skis to the new boots (thought they knew what they were doing) - so next morning, having taken the skis down to the meeting place found the boots didn't fit the skis! As the skis looked pretty knackered I demanded a pair of Orion carvers. Very nice! The company was Balkan ...

The company was Balkan Holidays and the fitting session was very CHAOTIC (especially considering we had 3 days without sufficient snow).
