just returned from pamporovo on saturday and I can definitely say that I'll never be back. The people were nice, and the resort okay, but lets face it, the only thing that needs to be good on a skiing holiday are the slopes, and quite frankly the slopes of Pamps are not up to scratch

Slope conditions were okay, but a bit icy and slushy towards the end of the week.The choice of runs are very poor. I spent more time in the chairlift getting back to the top of the mountain than I did actually skiing. On some of the blue runs there is a long stretch of flat, which requires a couple minutes pushing....the only decent runs are the black-to-red which bring you out at the husky bar or along side the one man chair lift.

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it, and I'm glad I went, but I'm absolutely amazed at how people who enjoy skiing can go back here year after year after year.....its easily the worst place Ive been to in terms of slopes.

Maybe your comment on 'the only things that matter on a skiing holiday is the slopes' is not accurate to many of us then.

I totally agree that if that is your one and only requirement then Pamporovo will not be for you. Shame you never went to Chepalare as well, as they have a continuous 7km red/black run that is excellent. Cost us 3 lev each to get there by minibus + 12 lev day lift pass.

However most of us Pamp die-hards go there for the friendships, the fun and the chance to renew old aquaintances, and I plus 100's of others would never consider anywhere else.

You gave it a go, so good on you.

Thanks for that. I have read these boards as a lurker for quite some time and have seen how friendly the 'Regulars' are - which is great if your in the Clique but not so good if you aren't.

I had wondered to myself exactly how good a "Skiing" location bulgaria is but have never been convinced about how good the "Skiing" is, afterall it is supposed to be a "Skiing" holiday.

Don't get me wrong, if you like the place and your happy with the limited challenge that the area appears to present then fine. But for real Skiing I think I'll stick to France and Italy.

Shock, horror - I loved Pamps, but as I said to Pete on the phone last night, as a beginner, Borovets was better for me.

In Borovets last year, most of the beginners were skiing easy reds by the end of the week, in Pamps we were still on that green run - I craved a bit of variety.

Since it now turns out that Crystal won't charge us to change from Pamps to Borovets for next year, sorry, but I'm going to Borovets on 5th Feb now. It also turns out that one of my scouts will be celebrating his barmitzvah on the date we were originally supposed to go so now I can go to that too.

I don't agree, Borovets has plenty going for it off the slopes (apart from the people who hassle you to go into bars)..but the amount of runs is the poorest i have seen.
The runs at the top are small and then there is no complete downhill slope to the bottom of the gondola..without walking, pushing or horse and carting.
The pistes are rarely marked and the T-bar lift is franky a pain as you have to do TWO separate parts to get to a decent height. Also if the gonola is unable to go to the top (if it's too windy) your choices are limited even more. With only 3 ways down (2 reds and a red that changes to a black).
