A very sweeping statement my friend but sadly in the right area
There is definate opposition from Balkan to the provision of additional carriers and
routes into Sofia and Plovdiv. They in their turn are opposing the planning of a provincial airport near to Bansko...
At present the non-intergation of BG into the EU prevents this being taken to the courts, come 2007 it could be very differant...

In the late 1980s, Bulgaria's communist government built a no-frills ski lodge for students and installed a creakingly slow chair-lift on the slopes above Bansko, a small town overlooked by the peaks of the Pirin mountain range, reads today’s issue of the Financial Times.
Facilities at the "Akademika" were spartan, but memories of sparkling powder snow and some of the longest pistes in Europe stayed with the IT and engineering graduates who emigrated to find jobs during the early transition years.
Now they're back, transformed into Bulgaria's new entrepreneurial class, with cash to spend on a weekend ski home. The place to look? Bansko, no longer a down-at-heel mountain hideaway but one of the shiniest ski resorts in "new" Europe.
Ulen, a Sofia-based company, has invested EUR 40 million (USD 31,250,000; BGN 78,000,000) to install a state-of-the art ski facility, with equipment specifically designed for piste and weather conditions on the Pirin slopes.
I also heard (sorry haven't got the link) that Budget carriers e.g. easyjet etc. will not be able to fly into Bulgaria for several years (2010?) after they have joined the EU.
This is an EU rule which allows national businesses a chance to get upto speed before the big boy's from the EU are allowed in.
Hmmm - I have been pondering all of this with interest. As I understand it once they enter the EU they won't be able to carry on having a 'monopoloy' over everything (though I note the later link saying they can until 2010). I wondered how it would go as thinking about buying property out there and wonder what the knock-on effect of all of this will be. My ski instructor told me this year that there was talk of an airport going up near Bansko but I guess not if Balkan has anything to do ...
