A deal is a deal. If he does not know the right way, it is upto him.
Always ask the taxi driver in advance (or write down) for a confirmation and have a look at the price list published in the back or front of the taxi.
Have a look at the site of ok-taxi and keep in mind what the taxis look like!
If you want to strike a deal say "bes aparat" - no taxameter please - and offer 70 stotinki per kilometer.
Following this will avoid nightmares.

OR: Learn Bulgarian, at least some words ...

Roger B you comment about "he's only a cabbie, hardly the world's most, gifted", I do not agree, I am a Nursery Nurse and work with all age ranges of children, and a taxi driver(female) I would not call myself" hardly gifted", but I see you are the sort of person who would do a runner and take the food out of the mouths of the cabbies family, if the driver got lost that's his fault and should only charge the norm, I agree that cabbies will try and rip you off in different countries, ...

re: RIP OFF TAXI'S SOFIA AIRPORT

should have booked with
www.skitransfersbulgaria.com
They would never cancell your booking like this, even if they should arrange for another transport themselves, which would pick you up for no extra fee and delivered you to your destination hassle free. Great service
