I can't wear ski socks at all. I am most comfortable skiing wearing nothing at all (No, silly - I'm talking about under my boots - before you get any ideas) but now just wear shoe liners so that I can wash them and the boots don't get too smelly. The boots are such a perfect fit that anything thicker is not comfortable.
buy at least one pair of good of socks you can always wash them in the hotel sink and put them on the radiator for tommorrow.. why scrimp on the most important factor of yr holiday ..your feet.. if you have a problem with them then everything is ruined..
My family take 3-4 pairs each - like you I can't afford to buy loads of pairs especially as they are still growing!
The kids will sometimes wear a pair 2 days running, or we wash them out (takes like one minute using soap/shampoo under a tap) and dry them on the radiator.
I am very particular about my ski socks, and have only ever found one pair which are perfect. I wear this one pair every day and wash them every night! Goodness knows what I'll do when they wear out - others of ...

Yes, they are my own boots - I wouldn't go naked under hire boots - just think of the athletes foot you might catch!! bleurgh.
No friction burns on shins at all but then I usually wear footless thermal leggings so that provides a little protection for the shins.
And there's only one person mad enough to ski in just a thong! We'll be watching the webcams next week for a repeat performance!!
I find rubber gloves fantastic. They take a while to get on but using talc helps. Really comfortable and my feet don't sweat a bit. Best thing is that when you take them off after a hard day on the slopes my wife can use them to do the washing up. We always go self catering so the gloves are as handy for my wife off the slopes as they are for me on them. Now if only i could find a use for a hoover on piste my wife would be doubly happy!
Haha love some of the amusing responses that get posted on here!
naked skiing, gloves on yer feet and mountain hoovering!.....
anyway, I did resort to some sock buying today at my localish ski centre and while the guy in the shop was trying to flog me the most expensive pairs for £19 I'm glad I avoided some which I was previously considering as they were cheap and nasty and went for a double pack of "middle of the road" socks instead. They still have a bit of shape and give some support but didn't break the bank really.
And thanks for the advice on washing things; to be honest I actually didn't even really consider it so there is a very strong chance I shall be doing that I think!!!
just dragged my suitcase out and and starting to pack - woop woop!.............
