Ripped OFF

Just got back from Pamporovo after our 3rd year there.

As a group of 11 we went to my favourite restaurant 'the old house' opposite Murgavets hotel last saturday (our second night) where we couldnt wait to have 'the lamb'. Altghough the meal was slighlty cold we didnt say anything as we are not complainers by nature and just put it down as one of those things. We stumped up the 420 lev bill with tips taking the total to 440 and left. The waiter followed us out 30 seconds later and said ...

Altghough the meal was slighlty cold we didnt say anything as we are not complainers by nature and just put it down as one of those things. We stumped up the 420 lev bill with tips taking the total to 440 and left. The waiter followed us out 30 seconds later and said we were 150 lev short on the bill. We were astonished as the heads of the three families in our party had all visibly put their share in, handing over wads of notes.
Although shocked we were open minded that someone in our party may have made a mistake (although we only had 2 beers each) so to avoid embarrasment we each stumped up an extra 50 lev to pay the extra 150lv.
That evening we went through our cash and all three families were down 50 lev on what we had spent since the start of the holiday, secondly several 50 lev notes used to pay the initial bill were nowhere to be seen when we were approached by the waiter.
thirdly two of our party put in 160 lev as their share and one put in 120 lev......The maths and note permutations are obvious to all!!
We went back and spoke to the waiter and the manageress but they were simply not interested however I got the didtinct feeling that this is not the first time this had happened from another waiters reaction.
A great shame as I will never darken their door again.

You yave been warned folks !!

What a shame, I love that restaurant too.
I had heard so little about the overcharging I was hoping that it was dying out. I think it is important that we share such news (however embarressing it is) and share the good experiences too.

Hi Peter,
I am sorry for that.
But there are always two sides of a medal. We have been travelling to BG for more than twenty years and of course as in every country you have to obey some rules:

1. Have a look at the menu first and check prices
2. Ask for a printed bill from a cash register (I guess you got one after each order)
3. Never leave the restaurant before the waiter checked the money (if you leave before you withdraw a chance to say "Thank you" and you can not exactly know ...

re: Ripped OFF

That is good advice, we always wait for the waiter to check the money before leaving. We wait for them to offer us our change and then pass any tips directly to the waiter who served us, ensuring that it gets to the right place. Keeps it clear and above board.

re: Ripped OFF

I have dined in this restaurant a cpl of times before and I have to say I enjoyed it but r I have read a few similar rip off reports on it. So the best thing to do is hit them where it hurts in the pocket do not go back and give them negative reviews, I would also suggest if the Old House has a email address send them these posts as maybe the management would appreciate reading them.

If Pamporovo wants to be seen as a serious player in the tourist world they have to clean up their act and sort out all the little cons that go on ie, taxi fares ,restaurant bills property management companies,

re: Ripped OFF

Good advice from Roland, you don't know who could pick your money up off the table, could have been worse, the whole lot could have gone walkabout

re: Ripped OFF

Thanks for stating the obvious Roland, however it is good advice when dealing with dishonesty which I had not expected to find there after being a reqular customer. For information we did not leave the table unattended as we made sure the waiter was there and was at the table before we left. Therefore the one side of this medal is 'He stole it'.........plain and simple!!!!!
