Know the cost of what you put into your basket in the supermarkets of Borovets – I did and on two occasions was well over charged. Of course I sorted it out at the till and the ladies were very apologetic – Never just pay what they ask for add it up as you go along. As many people on this site say they are only there for a few months and want to maximise their potential income.
I think we are a little prissy about what happens in Bulgaria – I had a great holiday there this New Year It was cheap in the scheme of things but If I was being pointed many aspects of the holiday didn’t represent value for money and there is a culture of maximising their potential earnings while the skiers are there, unfortunately that (in my experience) manifests its self in a little unscrupulous practices on occasion – see supermarket post. Let get it in perspective there are many partisan people on this site with many vested interest and I would fight like hell if I had an apartment like them and criticises every negative post but you can go to Bulgaria and have a good time – lets not forget that – You can’t compare a Swiss/American/French holiday to Borovets-Pamps (the only two I have been to) It is like comparing apples and pears- Many will say they go to both resorts during the season but in truth most only will be going to either a Bulgaria resort or a more Western resort – I enjoyed Bulgaria and yes it was value for money I went to the better end of restaurants and paid a little more for a few extra luxuries but when I go to Lake Tahoe to ski It will be up to three time more expensive than Bulgaria? (Total costs) and I don’t expect to have three times more fun – I do expect to have a standard of service that I don’t get in Bulgaria and I do expect to pay exactly what I have purchased in shops (exactly the same if I was in Marks and Spencer’s) and I do expect that any ski guide/instructor will say what type of food do you want to eat for lunch (they will no doubt get a kick back from the restaurant) rather that dragging you to a predestined location
My point is; Bulgaria serves a purpose – I went with three other families over new Year and Bulgaria was their only option for a ski holiday this year and they had a great time (I was able to give them good advice about some of the more obvious scams) No one got mugged we didn’t get bothered by loads of prostitutes - we had a good family vacation a few minor issues cropped up but all were sorted out – I can not say I will swap my Skiing over the next 12 months in Italy and the usa for Bulgaria that would be silly but Bulgaria served a good purpose and long may it continue to do so. I hope that the great snow this year brings in more new people next Year (quiet a few will drop away due to the service they receive) but Bulgaria does offer a cheap holiday and people have been a little rude calling it Blackpool with snow but I have been to Blackpool on business on several occasions and if you look you find excellent restaurants and accommodation and don’t have to force yourself into an evening with the stag and hen parties – People --get Bulgaria into perspective It’s cheap and cheerful.

That was the point my friend Chalk and cheese holiday wise is not about spending a few pounds extra but; a beach holiday laying on a sun lounger compared to an active skiing holiday - apples and pears very similar two skiing holidays are 90% the same (particularly this year with the great snow we have had) it’s the peripheral differences; Cost - ambiance and the like.

It's not only Bulgaria you can get scammed
This is a cut and paste

Spain was the top place to be ripped off by conmen, followed by Turkey and Paris, with couples more likely to be targeted. They accounted for 43% of victims, while lone travellers made up 18%.
a common scam is the waiter asking what you want to drink before he gives you the (overpriced) menu. Always look at the menu for the price before ordering and check the bill.
