Shocking Statistics

Had some shocking info concerning Bulgarian Orphanages sent through to me today from FV (thanks Tony.)

The total number of children housed in Orphanages throughout Bulgaria is 8,457, living in a total of 144 institutions. Of them, 98% have at least 1 parent still living, so very few are actually orphans.

There are 14.8 million children in the UK. So putting that into perspective, if the same percentage of UK kids were in Orphanages, that would be a staggering 880,000 childen in care ...

Many of the Bulgarian kids end up be being adopted by foreigners and moved away to a land they don't know and trying to understand a language they don't speak.

The basic principals of ' out of sight - out of mind' has been adopted in Bulgaria for many year now, so let's make sure 'our' kids are never allowed to be out of our sight or out of our minds, and lets continue for as long as we can to give these children hope.

Foreign adoption is not legal in Bulgaria and hasn't been for some time. Indeed, foreign of adoption may be a good thing as local adoption of Roma and disabled kids is not very successful. Many kids go to state institutions for short periods - when parents have to travel to work, or when the parents have insufficient funds to support them for example - and then return to their families at a later stage. Nevertheless it goes on and many children are adopted by foreigners. A new law is currently under review in Bulgaria which will legalise the adoption of any child by a foreigner if the child has been a resident of an Orphanage for more than 1 year.

I don't want to belabour the point but you are not correct. It is currently illegal for foreigners to adopt kids and it does not go on at all although it has done in the past and as you rightly say, legislation is under preparation to let it happen again. Friends of mine adopted BG kids 6 or 7 years ago but it was stopped after the scandal of child selling in Romania around that time.

Forgive me Mat - I neither want to labour the point either, but a meeting entitled Hear The Child was held in Sofia on Friday 8th February 2008 where the Bulgarian Minister of Labour and Social Policy Emilia Maslarova stated the very same as I have written. That's where I got my information from.

Pete, we have looked into adopting a child from stoikite but it is looking impossible, I am upset by this as me and my hubby know we can give this child a good life, however we have not given up yet

PP - So why do you keep going there year after year and in doing so support the Bulgarian Govenment/infrastructure if you feel so disturbed? I'm sure like with most up and coming countries, kicking them in the back pocket would probably do a lot more if you voiced your opinion that way???????
