Without tourism the people wouldn't have as much as they have. You ask any working Bulgarian and they would be horrified at the thought of no tourists or foreign investment. At least by visiting and talking to locals, issues are highlighted and brought to our attention. You've only got to read some of the threads on this board alone.

So what would you prefer me to do - stay away?

I go there because I love the people, the country and the atmosphere. Now that I have a better understanding of their culture I feel that I am in a position that means I can help In a very small way, so I am. Bulgarian people are not bad people, but they are somewhat behind most of Europe when it comes to human rights and the care of less fortunate citizens.

What they need is education on how to correct this and the resources to do it ...

What they need is education on how to correct this and the resources to do it.Sitting back or walking away from it will solve nothing, nor will 'kicking them in the back pocket' as you put it.

If enough people make enough noise then we will be heard, so I will continue to beat my drum for as long and as loudly as I can.

Well said Pete, They do need help, I remember my first visit to Orphanage 10 years ago, I sat in Directors office, they offered coffee, each cup of water was heated with an element, On my next visit I bought an Electric Kettle in Varna, still in Use. The laundry lady had an old iron where you lifted the handle up and placed hot coals in, this was for (60kids) I got an Electric Iron, had to replace after four years. It hurts when you have to show kids that you have to take the paper off a ...

Thank you Julie, I will do up a disc of photo's over the years, let Pete have it then it can be passed around. I did have the honour of visiting Michael Shields (Liverpool supporter) when he was in Jail in Varna. F.V.

No, she didn't - she said that it was foreigners who adopted the disabled and Roma kids, not kids generally. There are some useful numbers in one of the comments here http://www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=90206
