Skiing lessons before we go or not?

re: Skiing lessons before we go or not?

Of course having lessons before you go is going to help your skiing. But is reaching the highest possible level of skiing ability necessarily the whole point of a ski holiday?
For me, it's not. Some of my fondest memories are from learning to snowboard - before I could even stand up properly - and laughing about it with friends who were the same.
Some people here are saying that learning the basics is a waste of a day's holiday. Not if you really enjoy that day!

very mixed views from everyone.... thats what discussion forums are all about......to sumarise i would say that each individual does what they feel to best and right for them..... I am sure we would all agree to that???

Hello Jason,

Its great to get a few lessons before you go, but I wonder what your expectations of ski school in Pamps are?

You say you have booked 'Learn To Ski' packs.

Do you know that you could find yourself in a class of up to 14 people. The majority of these people will have never put on a pair of ski's, meaning that you are going to spend the first few days learning all the basics with them. Thats how ski school works!!!

You probably wont, unless you are very lucky, get off ...

You probably wont, unless you are very lucky, get off the nursery slopes for the week.

Advice: If you are only a beginner especially with two children, I dont recommend venturing up the mountain without an instructor. It can be quite scary when you come to an icy steep part, and this could put you & your family off skiing for the rest of your lives.

I agree with 'snarfacus' above. I went went to the dry slope last weekend for a 3 hour practice session, and hope to get one more session in before I go to Bansko in Feb. Dry slopes/ Indoor slopes are great to brush up on your skills before you head out on holidays.

But I do think that it could lead beginners into a false sense of security, meaning that when they get bored of beginners ski school in their 1st week, they could head off up the mountain risking life & serious injury.

Chaliemoonhead... thanks for your comments... when i say "learn to ski packs" i mean full ski pack, ie tuition, ski hire, boot hire, ski lift etc... all booked with balkan hols..

I have been led to believe that we would be assessed on our first day at ski school and grouped accordingly to ability... is this correct ??

Hi Jason,

Yeah as Pete says you will be assessed. I thought you had beginner 'Learn To Ski' Packs.

I'm not sure what the assessment slope in Pamps is like, but I've seen a few people turn away from the assessment slope in Bansko, and go straight back to beginners. Tis a bit steep & icy at times, even the lift up to it is scary!!!

re: Skiing lessons before we go or not?

Oh my god I don't like heights, i'm now thinking i'll play with the kids at the bottom and let the hubby go off skiing for the week!! lol!

I live by Telford so that could be an option, like some of you say, at least we will know a tiny bit before going but then would we have to spend the first part of our holiday re-learning that 'tiny' bit before going onto the next stage? hmmm decisions decisions!!

Thanks for replies everyone Very Happy

Karen,

If you dont like heights, I hope you are not going to Bansko.

The gondola ride to the nursery slope will be a disaster for you. At times the gondola must be at least 800 feet above the ground....scary shit for someone afraid of heights, especially when the cable car stops, and then starts to roll backwards, then stops, and you are left dangling there for a few minutes...

Dont mean to scare you, but just highlighting what you should exoect if you are going to Bansko... ...

re: Skiing lessons before we go or not?

I take it you are going to Bansko.

Just to brighten up your day.....The Gondola ride last for more than 30 mins, with a little stop at mid station for the Chalin Valog Ski Runs. If you are a beginner....you wont be getting off here.

Try and enjoy the Gondola ride....Fantastic views on a clear day.....Kids will love it...keep an eye out for bear footprints in the snow down below!!!!
