Please don't! As although you are not ruining your own ski's some poor schmuck will be using them the following week ! Treat every bit of hire gear as if it were your own I say, and they those of us who don't have their own gear may get down the mountains in one piece!
Sorry to be a bore
Caz
Caz, fair point, however if you pick up your hire gear and the bases are badly damaged ask for them to be changed. It is not always possible to avoid small rocks etc hidden in the snow on the piste, skiing over rocks is also very dangerous, skis will slow down very abruptly or will flick sideways causing injury.
Caz, Depending on conditions sometimes skiing over exposed rock is unavoidable. When I was there all runs were open however the blue Martinovi Baraki run has that short section which is a steep right(for a blue) which then goes left joining the track that cuts across the runs on the Rila slopes.
As almost every beginner/lower intermediate skis that blue and snow ploughs/slides down it, that section was scrapped bare down to exposed rock. Also the lower sections of the Musala run get ...

This has reminded me of when I was in Boro a few seasons ago and would stand and watch in amazement as parents let their children ski down the concrete garage ramp to the ski lockers at the hotel across from the gondola!!
Yes Kingjon, I saw people trying to ski through to the shops in Boro in Jan (there was no snow!). I do realize , especially with this years conditions that sometimes its unaviodable so I agree with all the above comments - I probably should have changed my ski's in Jan although not sure it would have improved my skiing! Hi Kate - yep seems light years away - hoping to go back March but taken on two orphaned terrapins and they're costing me a fortune! Still hoping though - thought of Pete ...

The hire companies make a fortune renting dud gear - most western European resorts sell their skis at the end of every season. In Borovets they are still renting skis made in 1965. If the mountain operators can't be bothered to invest/manage the pistes, rent skis and trash them. Maybe in time the rental companies will put pressure on them to produce decent pistes. Why should visitors get their own gear damaged?
I didn't realise how bad the rented stuff in Pamps was until we were in France over Christmas this year. The company we hired from had just invested in new equipment - we were the very first to use our skis - and the difference was incredible.
I noticed a big improvement in my skiing .. but now I'm wondering if it was just the skis and perhaps I'm still the same old 'nervous intermediate' still ...
