Smoking policy

Anyone have any ideas if the Bulgarians are enforcing the smoking ban yet? Before I book I just want to make sure they are. Thanks

re: Smoking policy

When we were over last July (Golden Sands) there wasn't a single place we found that had a smoking ban.

re: Smoking policy

The smoking ban actually came in last year and was followed in most places uless it was of a certain size, in which case, they were allowed a smoking and non-smoking area.

Most restaurants are now non-smoking. As restaurant managers you can't risk not following it - we are checked all the time and it can be up to 3,000 to 30,000 leva fine and an individual fine for the smoker...

re: Smoking policy

When I have been to Bansko I ask the question to every bar I'm in.
Take 24hr british bar that has two sections one smoking one not. However after 9/10pm the non smoking section people smoke I have said to them it's no smoking they say after x time it doesn't matter. I then asked the bar staff they looked to see who it was and said there is nothing they could do about it!

The eatery in bansko square with a stream water feature in it we were in there last time it was packed noone smoking great so we got the only free two seater table next to a massive table of 12. The group of 12 were having the whole suckling pig looked amazing. Anyway when they had finished their main meal they all lot up - we had just started our mains and my wife was visibly pregnant. I spoke to them said no smoking they all just shook their heads laughed and said no and carried on. So I asked our waitress and another baan/guessing senior staff they said it's a no smoking place so I said that table are all smoking and they refuse to stop can you ask then to stop or go outside. They looked into the room at the table and said sorry there is nothing we can do!! We left our mains paid for the starter and the drinks we had had when they were not smoking.

This big meal was certainly Bulgarians and from their dress code and jewlery very wealthy.

Either way this attitude really annoys me. Anyway those places lose our trade. Also why when I highlighted my pregnant wife they couldn't care less...

So a message to the owners of the places uphold the law.
Others please can you show mr how to report people so that it forces them to man up to the law and not let big money people bully. In fact we may dress very casually but we tip very well and give lots of repeat business on good service

re: Smoking policy

Right then, this was going to raise its head...
With near 70% of the Bulgarians choosing to smoke, and the 2nd biggest visiting group, the Greeks being similar, it would be financial suicide to ban smoking completely for virtually any establishment... The introduction of the smoking ban, or rules applying to it was a knee-jerk reaction from the BG government from pressure from the EU, at no time were the BG people consulted, and as with a lot of EU directives, they will be ignored.

There are a few non-smoking bars and restaurants (Axemans in Bansko is one i can think of) but there are not many...
This is not the UK, where laws implemented by our government which were directed by the EU, are policed, Bulgaria is like the rest of Europe... I will admit that some bars the smoking can be obtrusive, but as a non-smoker you are in the minority...
