SOFIA, Bulgaria — Regional officials say a Finnish snowboarder has been killed in an avalanche near the Bulgarian winter resort of Bansko and another was hospitalized with seriously injured.

The town's mayor said the slide happened Thursday afternoon on the slopes below the Todorka peak. Three other Finnish snowboarders who were behind the man survived the avalanche, including the one who was seriously injured.

The rescue teams rushed to the spot after one of the snowboarders used a mobile phone to call for help. The victim's name has not been released.

Bansko, which is the most popular Bulgarian winter resort, will host two events of the Ski World Cup 2011 this weekend.

re: Snowboarder killed in Bansko

Oh no thats really sad :-(

Can I ask, and I apologise for my ignorance, but I have never been skiing in my life, and a bit scared about stories about people dying in avalanche accidents and all, is it generally only when you go off-piste that there is a risk of avalanche? My husband told me not to worry as we will just be on the marked beginner slopes, but I'm one of life's worriers and this is something i know nothing about so hoping for some reassurance?

thanks.

These guys went off-piste in an area they shouldn't have as usual. Avalanche warnings were given out but some people think that they can ignore the people who know as they know better. Also for some people its all about the risk you take and thats what they get off on.

They take their lives into their own hands and unfortunately as in this case bad things happen...... its your risk.

Dont worry anout avalanche especially being a beginner. You will be in areas where it is very unlikely ...
