Done the trip twice now, kind of worth it if you have a late transfer but it all depends on your guide. The first time we had someone who gave us cursory information but was too busy on her mobile to be at all engaging.

Second time however was brilliant, stuck with her to hear about the second small church that has the earliest examples of Cyrillic (developed in the First Bulgarian Empire in the the 10th Century and named after it's inventor Saint Cyril, but heavily influenced by Greece) and loads of stuff about the fall of communism and, as it was March, Martenitsa. (The red and white wrist thing)
BUT, on that second trip we went to a place for food near the centre and got a BBQ chicken thing that knocked us on out backs for a few days!
I did it a few years ago and said "never again"
Then I had a change of heart and I did book it AND IT WAS WORSE. We went to some museum the second time, clearly no investment since the soviets were there. I have not been back since other than an enforced stay due to flight cancellation. If you do go, make sure that you do not pack all your warm clothes away, you'll need them and the 'free' pizza will leave you still hungry. But hey one mans meat anothers poison and all that so if you do do ...
