re: Sofia formally applies for 2014 Winter Olympics

This is a joke - 90% of the population make no more than £150 a month, pensions are £30 a month (whereas the standard of living is not that much lower than elsewhere), no more than 3 or 4 cities in the country have sewage/water treatment plants, there are no modern motorways and airports and they want to host the Olympics?!!!

The only reason for this candidacy is the desire of the big Bulgarian construction companies to have all the infrastructure they need built by the state so they can ...

The only reason for this candidacy is the desire of the big Bulgarian construction companies to have all the infrastructure they need built by the state so they can sell better the holiday appartements they are building in Bansko and Borovetc areas. Only an idiot can possibly believe that a rundown country like Bulgaria could host the Olympics! The opening ceremony in Turin last night cost Euro26 million - where is Bulgaria going to find the Euro2 billion needed to host Olympic Games???

hey Rome/Italy was not built in a day John!!! at least they are trying.
To be honest not sure I fancy the idea of them winning, but from a purely selfish point of view - I dont think I want the world landing on its doorstep and discovering what the rest of us already know, thats its a beautiful vertually untouched country - it would become like the rest of the ski/sun resorts and ruin it for the already converts to Bulgaria.
I appreciate your point on the low wages and pensions, and I ...

I appreciate your point on the low wages and pensions, and I think in the very near future 2007 this will possibly change anyway and with it new technology its already catching up with the times.

The Olympics are a HUGE investment in the host country. If you want the poor to stay poor and only the rich to grow richer, have the Olympics in the same old places like Western Europe and USA. You know the host country doesn't pay the whole thing, right? But the Olympics promote the country , create employment and better infrastructure. After all, we are talking about 2014, i.e 8 years from now. In the following years, airports will be built in Bansko and Plovdiv, they are building Super ...

A lot remains to be done, but there is a chance a less known place gets to host this time. Don't underestimate Kazakhstan.

The olympics can also break the country, not always the good investment that it seems, Athens have found it a strugle since hosting the olmpics and iam sure bulgeria would be the same.

re: Sofia formally applies for 2014 Winter Olympics

I reluctantly have to agree with John.

Lets look at what Bulgaria hasn't got.

No slopes capable of staging the downhill.
No Olympic Stadium
No Olympic Standard Ice Rink/Ice Hockey Rink
No Ski Jump
No Bobsleigh or Luge Runs
No Airport close to a main resorts
Not enough hotels
No media comunication centre
Poor road links
Inconsistant Snow Record
Inconsistant Electricity Supply

Other than that, they have every chance.

well the French for the Albertville games had to build a bobsleigh, ski jump, ice rinks olympic stadium new roads, new stuff for the media, and at the time snow record wasnt great i should know i lived in the alps for 10 years so the bulgarians arent that far behind, good luck to them a few generators and they will be fine

Lenny: "The Olympics are a HUGE investment in the host country."

They sure are but it is the host country that has to fork out the cash. Bulgaria is strapped for cash and the only investment in infrastructure comes from Brussels and a little bit from some development banks. The country is broke and the working people make only 50% of its total population. Where is the money going to come from???

Come on guys, the people will not pay because the people will not profit. The Bulgarian bid is a business venture. The infrastructure can be built for a fraction of the cost of anywhere else in europe but will no doubt be sold for little more than it would be in the rest of europe.

PP I have the utmost respect for what you do on this board but man you have to realise that the Bulgarian Olympics has to do with the Bulgarian facilities or people. I reiterate that it is a business venture ...

Some people think that London won the 2012 Olympics because the world loves us and it would be romantic to have the Olympics in London. Others say than regenerating East London is a lucrative investment opportunity.

Bulgaria will host the 2014 olympics whether it is good for the Bulgarian people on not.
