I can't believe the amount of moaning I read on this board from people returning from Bulgaria. People moan about everything from the snow, accomodation, food, beer and anything else thay can think to moan about.
What people forget is the reason they decided to go to Bulgaria in the first place, ITS CHEAP, now lets not lie about it, its the only reason.

If you could find a holiday in Austia/France for the same price you would take it. But don't forget in Austria/France you are paying £3-£4 for a beer and a meal for two will set you back £35-£40.
My message to you is "you get what you pay for" Bulgaria has its faults but it still represents great value for money.
If you don't like it you are more than welcome to pay double the price for your sking holiday and four times the price for your beer/food in France/Austria next year.
I nearly forgot my favourite moan so far "nobody speaks English" some people should get out a bit more.
skiing holidays to bulgaria have gone up this year quiet a lot when looking I could find simlaer holidays to france and austria for less than bulgaria, I grant you beer ect coasts more but the ski areas are far better, bulgaria needs to sort it out, its either cheap and chearful which people will accept or they are trying to compete with the alps which means standards must improve, at the minute they are trying to do both and its not possible. sorry not a moan just pointing out the ...

I agree, I think English people are so blinkered, they go abroad and expect everything to be like you get in England. The people are really friendly and will do anything to make you happy. The hotel rooms are kept very clean considering the conditions outside. We went to the Rila (first time ski) a couple of weeks ago. Didn't find it as cheap as people made out, but we don't mind spending our money when we go to spain etc. I found it a truly wonderful experience, and looking around ...

Cheap, borovets may be by western european standards, but generally, you receive a much warmer welcome than France and Switzerland.
The infrastructure may not be perfect, but health and safety in Zermatt can be a complete nightmare compared with Borovets. (Unmarked ropes; hanging cables; unsheilded arc welders; unguarded precipices; need I go on?) .I have never observed any of these faults in resort in Bulgaria. (but i dare say someone has a horror story or two - you get them ...

So the drag lifts are a little old, but they still do the job, and resort managers don't realistically expect to be changing lift systems each year. There are, however, plans afoot - Borovets is set to expand. Lifts to be improved. Super Borovets is on its way.
Hotel food may not be to your tastes, but there are plenty of small eateries in Borovets offering something more appetising. I last stayed in a small clean hotel in old Borovets. Didn't care for the cuisine - so I ate out. But apart from that, the hotel was fine. I've had similar experiences in Switzerland, France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Romania, Scotland - and otehr places. Poor food ina hotel, or poor service from a rep, is not a reason to slag off an entire resort.
If people open their eyes and make the most of where they are, they will have a wonderful time in Borovets and other Bulgarian resorts.
Why do so many people return again and again?
Because they have fun.
Incidentally, 2nd week in February, Borovets, the snow was fine and oh so deep in places on the top sections. Hard snow is not ice - and there was more slush at equivalent resorts in Austria with posher hotels - than in Borovets.
"I nearly forgot my favourite moan so far "nobody speaks English" some people should get out a bit more. "
I always have a big laugh at that one Gogs!!
Hey Hey Hey... English are wingers and make all other english speaking countries look bad. Just because we speak English dosent mean we are English.
I paid £199 for my Boro holiday with everything but ski passes and hire included, Last year I skied in Leck and the accomodation for one night cost 200 euros.
Maybe the moan should be: "No body who comes in my bar speaks Bulgarian!"
I've found most people speak some English (My favourite little hotel excepted.)
But if the Brits are patient and just try to communicate in a friendly manner, it's amazing how people can make each other understand their needs and concerns. (Unless you're in France/Switzerland.)
You're right Tanjette, maybe some people should get out more.
English is not my mother language.
From the moment I move 50 km its French
Its strange that we somethimes forget that we can understand each other 'speaking' with hands&foots
Thats how I felt when I first went to Bulgaria, supposed to be biking in Kos but 'accidently' discovered BG.
I reciently ate in a pub in England, where the food was poor and the service shabby,(no loo paper and grotty ) and it cost a fortune.
We have always found an English speaking Bulgarians anywhere in Bulgaria, and Bulgaria is one of the most beautiful countries I have visited, ( we drove from Sofia to Pamps, across to Bourgas, up to Karvana and back to Sofia) far superior to the french and swiss alps.
Granted the scope of the skiing is better in the alps, but a holiday should represent more ...

Don't forget that apres ski massage, £15 in Bulgaria, £45 in Britain. Apres ski in general is half the price than the alps and the quality of travellers is above average too, no posers or snobs who believe that to be great thing must cost a lot!
Stop moaning and enjoy this lovely country, it is (away from main tourist areas) unspoilt and grand.
Hi,
prices are rising because you pay them !!!!! 15 years ago they were much cheaper, but since you had discovered Bulgaria, it has become more expensive every year. That is the reason why Germans does not spend their winter holidays in Bulgaria anymore. As a matter of fact the prices for real estate in Bulgaria are as high because you pay them. Please think this over.
