First of all there is no passport control at the borders.
Emma I think you might have a problem with your transfer to bansko. And that is because usually flights are diverted to thessaloniki so there are no scheduled busses to run from the airport to Bansko. If your tour operator hasnt scheduled anything then you find a few problems.Major problems actually.
Thessaloniki bus station is at the opposite side of the city from the airport but still u will not find services to Bansko. That is because flights are only diverted there and not their original destination.
Was diverted to Thessaloniki last year, and can confirm that there is a passport control. Our bus was stuck here for over an hour as one person on the bus couldnt find their passport. Also the armed guards that came on the bus would not leave anyone go outside the bus. It was like a scene from an old film. They had to empty all the luggage off the bus so this one person could search their own luggage for their passport. Funny now looking back on it, but at the time we were hoping they would ...

Initially we were to land in Plovdiv, spent 2 hours circling Sofia untill we were diverted to Thesaloniki. It took us 23 hours to get from Cork to the slopes of Bansko!!
All sounds bit of a bummer Emma - you sure it was a 'friend' that recommended this journey! (only joking)
The positive is that the farmer strike may well be over by February but for the hassle and expense it seems you will incur from Thess to Bansko I would also recommend as Ashy does - try and change flights. The only hurdle you may find here is that Feb 13th is half-term week and therefore one of the busiest
Keep in touch on the board as I would be interested to hear how you resolve this.
The farmers strike will hopefully be over next week.As for pasport control I am 1000% sure there is no actual passport control. As for armed guards boarding on busses I would like to see that because I have seen any.Bulgaria is in the EU so there is no point to have an actuall passport control.
Well we had to travel to Thess last year due to fog, and there most certainly WAS a passport inspection. We were warned to stop the kids from messing about and let them get through the coach as quickly as possible. IIRC it took 20 minutes to get over the border.
