crazysnowboarder, I agree with you in that backcountry skiing/boarding is more dangerous that staying on the groomed pistes. However, I fell that i must correct you on the insurance issue because my insurance policy as well as many other winter sports policies will cover backcountry skiing.

Carrying transceiver, probes and shovels should be standard equipment for anyone venturing into the backcountry but even more important is that people really need to know HOW to use this equipment effectively and efficiently of which, unfortunately, many don't bother to learn adn automatically think that because they are carrying this equipment they will be safe.

I often tell people with very little backcountry experience but really keen on wanting to venture into the backcountry to hire a local guide who will teach them about snow science, hazard identification, reading weather charts, assessing slope angles and how to carry out a search and rescue using the safety equipment mentioned above. Being competent and proficient in the backcountry is skill hard won and not something that should ever be taken for granted.

Respect the mountain - it is more powerful than you!!
