Hmm this price/ value topic is interesting. I think though we have to accept that high prices and "ripping off" tourist's happens in pretty much every country in any major tourist destination. I am not saying that it is right, it is not but it goes on everywhere.
I have stayed in London a few times over the last 4 years the cost of a beer or a vodka & coke is bloody disgusting in hotels. £9.50 for said Vodka and not much change from a fiver for a beer. Oh and want a simple sandwich that ...

Have a coffee and cake in St Marks Square Venice £10 please!!! A meal in a normal restaurant in Paris? Re-mortgage your house mate.
Prime example of ripping off a captive market happens right on my doorstep at Luton airport. As some of you may know I am a Private hire driver I operate a Jaguar S type and believe it or not a black cab from Luton airport is one of the most expensive cab rides in the country, in fact a couple of years back it was the second most expensive!! You will pay a lot more to jump in a black cab with a driver who does not speak english and who does not know anywhere outside of Luton than to have me pick you up in a Jaguar!!!!! Now that is a blatant rip off of a captive market.
One thing annoyed me in Pamps last year was the cab fares. I was charged 18 lev for a 3 minute journey which even by prices were i live was very high. Needless to say they got the money off me once only. Regardless of what anyone says these prices are extortionate and way over the top. I have no problem with developing countries and price rises and expect to pay a bit more year on year. If they priced themselves properly i would have used them all week 3 to 4 times a day. So for any Pamps ...

Ah Mr DW I must point out to you that the price you pay on a meter is set by the local council and nothing to do with said taxi driver!! I am a Private hire driver and in effect can charge what I like, but you will find most Private hire drivers are cheaper than a Taxi.
agree totally I only use a black cab if there are no others availible, One question though I use the same firm all the time the outward journy is always cheaper than the return, only explaination is I was under charge on the way out, EVERY TIME!!!!!
I admire you Monty for not using the so called taxi again due to being ripped but I'm afraid to say that the 18leva you initially paid would have paid for 3 to 4 trips anyway!

Daniel, I agree with you in as much as all major cities in the world are very expensive compared to other areas of the country, London being a prime example. But having managed pubs in London myself, at no time did I have one tarif for english and one tarif for tourists. Also, I don't know any other places that can charge 7 or 8 times the price in one area as they do 20 miles away.
In conclusion... it's not the price, it's the "rip-off the tourist" mentality that gets on my tits.

Well it kept me in good shape the extra walking. But I heard from other people they were charged this as a minimum fare. Maybe we just found the rogue ones. Anyone just back enlighten us on charges.
