Last year (actually it was Jan 2007 so this year, but it seems like last year now we are getting sorted to go again in 18 sleeps!) in Pamps we took unlocked phones (cost - £10 in markets/cheap independent computer/phone shops to get them unlocked).

Last year (actually it was Jan 2007 so this year, but it seems like last year now we are getting sorted to go again in 18 sleeps!) in Pamps we took unlocked phones (cost - £10 in markets/cheap independent computer/phone shops to get them unlocked).
On arrival in Pamps we went to Alaska (supermarket) and bought a lovers pack of 2 sim cards for 20 euros. This included some talk time but we added on something like a 5 or 10 lev call credit card, I don't remember now. It does take a while to activate though, like overnight in our case, but the credit lasted us the full week. We contacted each other at least twice a day - this was me skiing green and my 14yo son snowboarding reds and blacks so there was no way we were going to meet up except back at the hotel!
So easy, so cheap, and so great to be able to keep in touch with so little hassle. If you don't have a walkie talkie already I'd say don't waste your money getting them.
We plan to use our Bulgarian sim cards again from 29 December in Borovets.
