The programme will further fully ban any type of advertising that could be related to cigarettes. Currently, cigarette advertising is prohibited on television, radio and newspapers. However, billboards are still a popular means of tobacco promotion, so long as an actual image of cigarettes is not seen. A part of the programme will also include a telephone hotline to advise those wishing to quit smoking. Gradually, by 2010, Bulgaria is supposed to adopt EU requirements on cigarette content. According to them, 1mg of nicotine, 10mg of carbon monoxide, and 10mg of tar at most will be allowed.
Gavrilova says that “if we manage to at least implement the plans we have currently put forward, this will be good enough”.
Nonetheless, she believes that a full smoking ban will eventually become a fact in Bulgaria, whether people like it or not.
Moreover, according to Gaidarski, the majority of Bulgarians are in favour of a full ban on smoking. He based this opinion on social research that has apparently been implemented. Gavrilov assures that there are enough resources for the implementation of the programme and it is highly likely that it will be accomplished by 2010. Gaidarski also said that he had every hope that the law is good enough, and thus higher financial sanctions for law breaching of smoking at public places were not necessary. Indeed, as usual, it is more control that is needed.

The way I see it, is that, it's my choice how I abuse my body. If buying fags is perfectly legal and I choose to smoke why is it fair that there should be a total ban. If 70% of pubs and clubs were non smoking and 30% were for smokers we would all be happy and we wouldn't be having this debate. Every body has the right to breath cleam air!A bit of consideration for other people , whats wrong with that? , we dont want to smell like an old ash try - or want to die early with cancer!

Yes, Every body has the right to breath clean air. Does that mean then, that you will do your part and no longer drive, fly, travel by public transport or use electrically operated devices?All of these things are polluting the air you breath far more than cigarrete smoke!

If this had gone to referendum, I very much doubt the majority would have ruled for a complete no smoking ban. Yes people deserve the right to socialise in a smoke free environment, but the smokers also have a right to endulge in a legal activity with those who choose to be in an environment with cigarette smoke.But then again, we live in a nanny state who finds it convenient to use 'facts' to make excuses for a dictatorship regime.

"Oh.... and as for your EU bit - Bulgaria does not have to comply with the total smoking ban until 2010."As far as I am aware, there is no EU-wide smoking ban anyway. Countries like the UK, Ireland and France (and perhaps others) have introduced their bans on their own accord.
Not that I do not look forward to the day when Bulgaria becomes a smoke-free environment...
