Newbie,There's (allmost) no better place to ski/board than France. Very large nr. of pistes, high altitude (sure of snow ), fare enough. Minus are; prices / attitude of French ( sorry, my opinion ) and - most important - the ( overall ) atmosphere ( =boaring ).
Try BG once. Love it or hate it. Once in a lifetime or come back every year ( like I do ).
Have fun there.

Ive skied and boarded in France, Italy and austria. I'm of to Bulgaria in March with some friends who have never been on a winter holiday. I have also never been to Bulgaria. I was in the same prediciment your in (more to do with money with my friends).
If you are woried about money and conditions then my best thought would be Austria. As good piste as you can get and not as expensive as France or Italy. People are very friendly as well and always makes you want to go back. ...
