Will we be able to ski?

Hi all,

Ten of us due to fly out to Pamoporovo on 16th Jan.

Heard that the resort has been closed. Does anyone know if any snow is forecast or if we will be able to ski in another resort?

re: Will we be able to ski?

You have ten days. I guess it depends on what you want a ski holiday for - if you want to do a lot of skiing and there is no imminent news of snowfall at one of the major weather forecasting sites I think you should be looking at postponing or moving to a resort where there currently is snow. If you are not so bothered about the skiing and want a break/fun/drinks with a bit of skiing then you'll probably be OK. Its too far from Pamporovo to transfer easily on a daily basis to Bansko.

I hope I haven't been too negative about the Blessed Resort as it would offend certain person (s) with the delete button....

Sorry to say it's not looking great Kirsty. Still raining at the moment which has totally decimated the slopes and there is nobody skiing at present.

Snow forecasts can often turn to rain and rain to snow so it really is hit-and-miss. Some snow likely towards the end of the weekend but Pamporovo needs a good 20cm+ to fall very soon if the early season is to be saved.

Skiing other resorts is possible but they too are suffering not just from the lack of snow but from overcrowding due to the very reasons you've mentioned. Apart from Chepalare which will be on a par with Pamporovo condition wise, you are looking at a minimum of 3 - 4 hours travelling just to reach another resort.

Cool

re: Will we be able to ski?

Thanks for getting back to me. Went the same time last year and we skiied every day, the conditions were great. Just guessing we'll have to keep our fingers crossed for some snow so we can at least get a couple of days skiing in otherwise we'll probably have to resort to ice skating outside the Perelik!!! re: Will we be able to ski?

As a matter of interest, what are conditions like in Pamporovo historically. I went out briefly exctly two years today, and there was plenty of snow, and people skiing. Has it always been a bit hit and miss, or has there been a gradual decline over the years re snowfall.

Another question I have, is when is the latest you can ski in Pamporovo - again going by previous years.

re: Will we be able to ski?

Well JMW - in the 90's and up until about 2005 this was always a good time to ski and anytime after mid December usually saw good skiing conditions. However the past few years has seen a marked difference and it's mainly been well into January before the major falls have arrived. Last year I arrived in Pamporovo on 22nd March and skied every day in fantastic conditions.

My guess would be that this year will be the same and I would expect the snow to be around well into April.
