High pressure still dominates over the Alps, Austrian winter tourist advisers claim it to be the worst start to a winter season in 147 years... They had winter sports 147 years ago ???
re: Worse start for snow in the Alps for 147 years
Mythbusters
Steve, 147 years ago is plausible ... but very, very doubtful.
That'll be 1864 with cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing already established in Norway. It took until the 1890's / 1900's, for it to reach the Alps though and there certainly wasn't an established season ... or any tows. So basically the Austrian winter tourist advisers are talking out their alps.

Aosta valley expecting 40-50 cm in next 4 days, good job as we are off there end of Jan. Seems much of the alps is to get snow in the next week, hopefully bulgaria too for all you going this season.
re: Worse start for snow in the Alps for 147 years
Yeah but the problem is that this is virtually every year now in bulgaria the snow is getting worse and worse January is almost a write off and only until end of febuary march does it get any better. I'm going to try and go unto borovets on the 15th to see what it's like but the Bulgarians seem fairly pessimistic about this year, AGAIN!!!
