We'll wait and see.. i still see it as a BG way of reducing the lift queues, less people, same profit... of course it could be an attempt at going up market ? attracting the jet set ? all those temporary wooden retail stands will have them piling in to throw balls at cans... On a serious note, we have been, and i mean all those in Bansko running businesses, extoling the 'value for money' aspect of BG, the main draw for most tourists... lets be honest, the skiing is ok, but Alpine it is not ! What with the massive increase in flight prices, fuel prices for transfers, and now the impending increase in lift passes.. added to that the less of a choice when picking ski-school, with additional costs... it is all going to add up to visitors considering elsewhere... The Alps generally are cutting costs, to try to tempt people back, great discount deals are available now for premier areas.....
We will voice our distain, on to deaf ears.. if you think its bad for us ? you want to be Bulgarian, they cannot afford to give up half a weeks wages for a days skiing (even our doctor)...
Lets just hope that Ulen see the problem, and the rise is reasonable (inflation ?)... You always have the option of skiing down in Dobriniste, which was awesome last season, 25lv a day, and 1.80lv for a beer in the hut at the top, proper BG skiing Very Happy

re: bansko lift prices

Errrrrr 70lv a day for us is expensive too on BG wages. If we both want to go we would have to work every other day of the week to sofia with both buses to make up for it..... Thats why we only get to ski 7days a season now!!!
The locals who live here all year get no benefit really from the ski season because all the work is taken by staff from the coast coming for the season...... So no they cannot afford skiing in their home town where they live every day of the year.

at least Borovets does try to do things for the locals ei cheaper passes at weekends and Yastrebets area ski pass only.

58lv, a rise of 3lv.... Very Happy
Not to bad really, forgetting the increases in season passes etc.... and if you consider the exchange for us Brits, around 10% better than last season, so effectively cheaper Wink

re: bansko lift prices

Yes cheaper for brits which is great!!! But what about us and people who are on bg wages and live here. Most locals cannot afford to ski here now they go to Dobrinisjte which is fab and also Kulinoto. These are places with very little slopes etc etc though so for the locals again it is not good news. Also goes up for countries who have the euro as their currency.

re: bansko lift prices

Dobrinishte run is nothing really and not worth the 25lv for what it is.
Locals maybe can not afford to keep on skiing but I know alot of friends in sofia(some of them ex ski instructors alpine rock climbers or mountain resque servicemen) who prefer to do concentrated skiing in Europe and doing 2 trips a season and always mega satisfied.
Sofia is awashed with brilliant offers for skiing in Italy Austria or Slovenia and the aritmethic is very clear.the rest the rest of the winter for most ...

Sofia is awashed with brilliant offers for skiing in Italy Austria or Slovenia and the aritmethic is very clear.the rest the rest of the winter for most of them is: now and then for ski fix in BG some at Borovets night skiing some in Vitosha night skiing or few days or half days in Boro.never in Bansko for well known reasons like overcrowding longer journeys and nothing like a snow resort just a town turned ski-Something.
The main thing is that the snow forecast for the next few days is good.
Listed above Bansko maybe trying going upmarket?
You go upmarket not by upping the prices but by classy ski region, reliable snow cover, easy transfers cute views not only in the resort but all the way to the resort fron the airport, perfect service and perfect timing financially and globaly.
Non of the above are to classify Bansko as a posh destination or to place it in higher group.
The prices which even with the figure of 50something levs are well disstorted and unjustified, are going to push away(no doubt in my mind) the average tourists and the below average financially tourists as well .Forget about the jet setters.

Irony is wasted on you jojo... the profusion of temporary units, the type of businesses (sex shop ?), touts, the now over zealous parking controls, new parking charges (when you can find a car park apart from Ulens, 12lv a day).. is becoming reminisent of the Black Sea coast... sorry, this is not up market, this is Sunny Beach on the snow....

Bansko has accomadation to rival any premier Europeon resort, mostly better in fact.. prices generally for eating and drinking are great, and the quality of the food and drink is top notch.. The snow record for a resort that rests on the same longitude as Rome is better than southern French resorts, the Pyrenee and Spain with similar altitude.. The area is one of the last wildernesses in Europe, the controls for off-piste and regulations are minimal, the slopes normally not that congested compared to similar periods in the Alps..... all these plus more add up to what could be a fantastic destination.. but year on year we are seeing little development, no real forward thinking plan (no plan at all really ?), a company driven by profit, and the desire from the very top to completely control skiing in Bulgaria, and monopolise every opportunity, driving other private enterprises to the wall..... If Minev and his minions continue, they will fail, i guarantee ! unfortunately it will drag all of us down with them... Don't get me wrong, i love Bulgaria, but do get very upset at the complete lack of business acumen shown here, and old school mutri/mafia attempting to fill their pockets.. they will initially but when the buck stops ? likely they will put prices up further to try to maintain their projected profits, that's the usual....

Quality of food-brings into mind the massive food poisoning in Bansko a month ago.
Bg slopes not congested as much as relevant resorts for the same peak weeks?-question with a straight answer...
Pyrenees (Andorra and France) are getting ahead with investment and fast.
Rome for skiing is funny to compare.
I would rather not get stuck with latitude comparisons when you can simply very easy shift north west or south where the snow is good at the current moment.

How about the same latitude somewhere in the middle of the ocean.then Bansko is best Smile
Accommodation is nothing if you have to battle with all the rest or if you have to pretend you are isolated in a bubble.
Cosy views?
Reliable snow?
Good miles ski runs-per- lift price ratio?
Easy transfers and pretty views on the way?
Daily or seasonal lift price compared with other similar lenght resorts?
Too many questions with one answer(sharp and short)
One answer and we all know the answer is that BG is best for alcohol drinking, cigarettes tobacco only.
Fact of the matter is that appart of the people with a property leg in the place and tight up going there for example, the bulgarian skiers have discovered better pastures and i have not heard one person to complain about their classy snowy covered with miles of good runs no queues and very attractive prices holiday outside of the Balkans so much that they have been converted for good once they have gone west to the Mecca.
Wild off piste skiing? Appart of the States you can ski down any place with snow cover (France Switzerland,Italy.
A bit restricted here and there in Austria but wild skiing is King in many resorts in the Alps. No point to name names because the list is very long.
Or when you say wilderness you mean rough around the edges with litter or ugly establishments or no establishments.
There are places you can explore wilderness in the middle of the major ski area or between ski areas all over the Alps , Pyrenees, in the Carpatians mountains-Romania,Makedonia even Greece
Very strange situation. Sad of course but thats life, Bulgarians are heading away, planning ahead saving in the process en mass.
Of course there will be some trying some of their own resorts for a quickie.

I guess in no time as you say the old mutri will swallow most of the cash good bussineses without any regrets and leave many families etc dry and feeling empty.
The mr ski is drilling in the direction of total control step by step and on all fronts big and small.
I face of normal res believe as with the aquisition of most of the main supplies under his umbrella done with kind of elegant force , the buck is far from stopping.
It will drag further into the future before fading away quitely because the competition with the other resorts is already lost.
At least the weather time time round is better.snow level are good for the start temperatures are low and more snow is ariving just now.
All of European mountains have perfect start so the choice for skiers and snowboarders is huge.
