Myself and my boyfriend went last week for our first time. We chose Bulgaria as it has some good beginner slopes, good ski school and it is cheap. We figured if we didn't like it at least we wouldn't have spent loads of money. As it turns out we loved it and would recommend Bulgaria to anyone.
I would recomend it as a great place to for the first time. It was where we went first time and we found it great. Don't know what its like at Christmas we went in early Jan and the resort was quiet - the instructor was brilliant and we only had a small group of 5 which was good for learning.
Other plus points friendly people fun atmosphere and cheaper than anywhere else - the value of the ski school is also greatcompared to some other european resorts.
Depends upon what you want to spend!
Bulgaria is by far the most competitive commercially as far as drinking and eating out goes. Its got a charm that I think you would find appealing, especially at Christmas.
Have not been there at Christmas myself so cant comment upon snow conditions etc (possibly not as good as a few weeks later), but been to Austria quite a few times over Christmas and new year (where by the way is expensive!). the locals no doubt would ensure you have a great time. ...

Once my kids stop believing in Santa, we will be off away over the Christmas period. Nothing like getting up on Christmas day and playing in the snow!
First time skiing Pamps is great. Its small and compact, all the runs lead to the same place, you wont get lost. Also the big bonus, is the green run which runs from top to bottom. Plus Pamps is the cheapest of the three!
