bulgaria currency

I'm planning to take my son to Bulgaria skiing in Jan 2009 (the last time I was there was in 1981, so I'm expecting a few changes!!!!). Will the currency still be the Lev or will they be using the Euro. This web site seems to just quote Euros, so I'm expecting the later.

Many thank in advance for any replies

re: bulgaria currency

Still Lev, every one always seems to sell things in euros though.
I think as people can relate to Euros this is why it used as most people do not no the Lev to quickly relate prices to it.
There is a few new lifts since 1981 but you will find the prices have shot up aswell, still £2 a pint in a resort i think is good and with a good search you will find a pint for £1 - £1.50.

Adamb

many thanks for your reply.

The last time I was there you could only exchange the currency in the country and exchange it back before you left, but looking on the hsbc web site it looks like I can exchange the currency before I leave.

I will expect the prices to have shot up. Bulgaria was a poor communist country when I was last there and you could buy a bottle of stoli vodka for £1 a bottle. Didn't do much skiing as I was hung over too much.

The leva is pegged to the euro at 1.95583. You will get a bad rate of exchange in the Uk as the currency is not popular so either bring a cash card and access your UK account through the plentiful ATMs here or bring sterling cash and change it here. If you're staying in a resort you'll find it harder to get a good rate so may be better off just using an ATM.

Do a search on a similar threads; there was loads of advise posted last year. I got a Nationwide Flexicount as I can withdraw money overseas for no extra charges. There are other accounts, and the post office travel card etc too.

re: bulgaria currency

The only problem i found in Borovets was that the ATM's wouldn't allow people to withdraw cash. I always take cash and exchange it in resort.

re: bulgaria currency

Yeah the cash points in borovets are a little on and off when ive tried to use them.
I have in the past took half cash and changed some more in the street in the small exchange booths which managed to do me a better rate then i could get any were.
You do have to be very carefull doing this and ony use a credit card so you are insured.
I think this year since im spending all winter there il be opening a flexi account like tufty-duck says.
