One of my 16yo boys did take a pair of wellies last year, and wore them toboganning and walking up to ski school. Just going out to a bar or restaurant he wore trainers most of the time.
The rest of us went to Shoe Zone (or another of those cheap shoe shops) and bought what they call walking boots for £12-£15 a pair. They are perfectly adequate for the purpose, though you wouldn't want to be hiking over Dartmoor or the Brecon Beacons in them they are fine for plodding round a ski resort ...

As for packing, fill them with socks, mars bars, toiletries, etc. Or wear them on the plane.
You may wish to consider Asolo Flame GTX - full goretex , matrix flexi sole and pulley eyelets - now avialable on line at c.£135 ...or there is a new Scarpa Mantra GTX - similar but more of a mountian boot - seen them for £150.
When you're done - stick them on Ebay and I'll buy them! (Size 10 only please!)
