re: helmet

i'm fully with you villers, the "elf & safety " brigade need to wind their neck in and let people live as they wanna live.its a risky sport .i'm wearing a lid for the first time this year, but i would defend your right to not wear one,we all take the risks we feel are acceptable and will have to take the consequences if it goes wrong. first its hats, then its you can't ski off piste, then its you cant do tricks.as far as i'm concerned as long as your not a danger to others anything goes. steve.g

re: helmet

While I agree it is up to the individual until it becomes compulsory, I'd just like to put my 2cents in.

I used to think I didn't need a helmet because I was a mature and cautious skier who only did easy blue and green runs.

Then I was taken out by a snowboarder on the Rila Blue. He hit me about halfway down the slope, but I woke up down by the ski jump. I was concussed for the best part of two days.

I consider myself very lucky - Natasha Richardson died a few weeks later after a seemingly simple fall on a green run.

Now it's a helmet every time. And I absolutely HATE what it does to my hair!!! But I'd rather be alive and have crap hair than the alternative. And so would my children and my parents.

re: helmet

I wore one for the first time in December. The course provider suggested it and glad I did after a couple of falls. Didn't help the bruised ribs or sprained thumb though. I found it quite hot despite the vents, strangely it gives you a feeling of confidence or maybe over confidence. My advice is try it for a day as you can hire lids, then buy one in resort if necessary.

Helmet or headache.

Enough said but just to add, some insurance companies say if you make a claim for head injury claims, if your not wearing a helmet then you are 20% contributory of the medical cost.

Helmet.

re: helmet

I'm lacking too - it's my 4th year skiing this year.

First 2 years, no helmet, no issue.

Last year, fell twice on the first day, landed heavily on my head both times. Shook me up badly.

Hence, all my Xmas prezzie money gone on a posh helmet (and knee braces of course!).

Money well spent in my opinion.
