1) I've never seen an "obvious" prostitute, you'll see far worse in your own town on a Friday night. It's too cold for no clothes.
2) The gypsies sit at the side of the road and sell knitwear / bells etc. Late at night there are some beggars, but not as many as London Transport.
3) It's great for families, it's friendly, eveyone makes friends through ski school etc, the language isn't bad etc.
4) I've never seen any "mafia" action

Don't panic. It'll be fine.

As you are in a family group, steer clear of the places like the Buzz bar which is a seedy, dingy, "happy-hour" nightclub, with lots of drunk 18-30's. It fun some nights, but kept your wits / wallet about you and your drink guarded and I wouldn't recommend it to young people, and I don't think children are allowed full stop.
Relax, you'll have a great time, and wonder what all the fuss is over.
Been 6 times with a group of lads, going this year with family including a 10 year old, it is the same as any holiday you go on, you can find the dingy drug type venues if you want but they are not in your face and plenty of options that are family friendly. I would not worry and definately be taking my daughter if i had concerns, in all the years i have been going i have only been approached once by a prostitute and that was when i was drunk so again not overly obvious

This is our 8th year and we are 3 families and always have a great time. Rila Hote bar always has 'ladies of the night' but it's over priced anyway, so avoid that. I think that is the only place I have ever seen anything obvious like that. You'll enjoy it loads - H x
sarah - I think the answer is in your original question. You clearly want a family 'skiing' holiday. Clearly prostitution in resort is common and at some point must also be noticable as at least two above responses to you are people referng to it?
Sarah, Read my response to the same question you raised in that other thread. Just because it's acceptable to one family doesn't make it so for you or vice versa. Some people take a risk and wish they never set foot in Borovets others come away with a more postive reaction. Ultimately you need to decide for yourself and family if you want to chance it.
Hey guys, thanks for the really helpful advice! As a newby it's all q complex about how to pick an affordable resort where you can relax and take care of kids safely. Happy skiing to you all, Sarah x
ooooh Jonah, though has a v sharp tongue. Dunno where the 921 came from as I really have not ever used a blog site b4, but I' currently illegally using someone elses wifi, so perhaps they blog a lot. I just started researching skiing and thought I'd look carefully at resorts and saw the forum. Nothing like hearing about a resort from someone who has actually been, That's were travellers forums are good. Keep smiling
