In Borovets you can get a lift pass holder on a retractable cord, allowing you to pull out your pass, pop it into the machine, then just let go and it stores it. Means you don't have to keep fumbling in your pocket all the time!!
You don't really need a retractable pass holder as the turnstiles at the lifts are such that people put their pass in their sleeve pocket of their jacket or side pocket and brush it over the sensor that will activate the turnstile. The benefit of this is that you won't risk losing your pass as it will always be securely zipped away in your pocket. It is also a major benefit as you don't need to fumblearound trying to find your pass and handle it will gloved hands. Basically, it's more ...

PS: this is in Bansko, but I would be surprised if Boro and Pamps didn't have the same system.
You do need a lift pass holder on elastic in Borovets, the passess all have to be inserted into a reader for the turnstiles to open. Thats how it has been for the last 3 times, doubt it's changed.
