Bit of advice please.

Am off on my third ski holiday to bansko, and thought its about time i bought some skis, then i thought well the hassle of carrying em, paying for extra carriage on the airplane, having em serviced when i get back and stuff, i thought that it might be better to just rent some skis.

Am off on my third ski holiday to bansko, and thought its about time i bought some skis, then i thought well the hassle of carrying em, paying for extra carriage on the airplane, having em serviced when i get back and stuff, i thought that it might be better to just rent some skis.

As we have only bought ski pass this year and not a full ski package then obviously no skis included.

So how easy is it to walk into a shop in bansko, rent a pair for a week.

I need to know, how easy, cost, are they good skis, how long does it take to sort out, where to go etc etc etc.

I dont really want to queue for 2 hours on the sunday moring to get skis at the gondola station as all my mates have now got their own skis. Id prefer to walk into a shop, pay and walk out with a decent pair of carvers...are the skis any good as well and not worn like you would get in an all inclusive ski package.

Any advice at all would be superb.

Regards
Gazzebo

re: Skis; Rent; Buy

if you are thinking of buying do it now some realy good deals in the shops I got a pair last week £200 the sooner you buy the better and you are straight on the slopes, plus the skis are the most expensive part of the hire equipment.
answer to your question, yes there are lots of shops around to rent from, one problem we found if it is a busy time many have already allocated to the ski packages that are pre booked. On a personal note we got down the ski area at 8.30 on the first day, hadnt ...

answer to your question, yes there are lots of shops around to rent from, one problem we found if it is a busy time many have already allocated to the ski packages that are pre booked. On a personal note we got down the ski area at 8.30 on the first day, hadnt booked ski hire ended up at intersport which was busy and not the best skis either although service was very good but they keep your passport or driving licence as security, all of the ski hire places want to see one or the other as proff of who you are, dont know if they keep them though. our skis were quiet old and mine in particular were quiet slow possibly not been waxed or maintained very well, by the time we got on the slopes it was lunch time.
On a personal note I would invest in some skis you will save both money and time in the long run, you said about the hassle of carrying them around with the hire skis we ended carrying them around with us as there was no real storage. Maintaining them if you only go for one or two weeks a year maintaince levels are low my husband has had his skis for 10 years and has only needed them waxed once, although he is thinking about up dating them now as they are the old type. The only thing I was told when buying my skis about taking care of them was dont use them on a dry ski slope hire theres as it causes them to get scratched.
If you are thinking of going skiing every year buy a pair, look at the cost of hiring you will have paid for them within two or three trips if you get them in the sales.

Sam.

Thanks very much, that is very helpful advice. I think my mind is made up now to buy some. TVM

So further on, does anyone know of anywhere that are doing some amazing deals at the moment then. I`m really looking for intermediate to advanced carvers or something like that.

Cheers
Gary.

re: Skis; Rent; Buy

there is a shop at castleford in xscape mine were intermediate £200, they also had some xdemos which were around £175 they were in good condition some looked like they hadent been used I bought new though, might be worth looking there. If you go with the intention of buying take your boots with you so they can fit them otherwise you have to go back.

Sam.

Lucky for me im going skiing tomorrow night at excape so I`ll have a look, but in the last few times Ive been there they didnt seam to have any that would suit me, they all seam to be odds and sods as though they had sold all the good ones. Hopefully they have some different stock.

Cheers for the headsup
Gazza.

Hi Gary
Try looking here WWW.SKIWEAR4LESS.COM My wife & i caught the bug last year & went to Bulgaria twice in a few months. Decided the best option would be to buy our own ski gear, Got a great deal as it was the end of season ski's boots ,ski bags & ski boot bags all for £500 for bot of us, Usually costs about £15.00 extra baggage so no waiting next year for us.

re: Skis; Rent; Buy

I have my own boots but rent my skis in Bansko. I paid 60 Leva last time which is about £21.00 thus saved me £15 in extra baggage and the extra £6 to not lug them about and have to wax them seemed good value.

Dave.

Whereabouts did you rent your skis from and were they good skis, and how easy was it to get them, ie. we land on the saturday night, id like to be able to walk into a place, pick up some good skis and walk out quite quickly because queuing is a nightmare on a sunday when you get a full ski package.

Cheers for the info.

re: Skis; Rent; Buy

I bought all my kit at the Saloman shop in Bansko last year. Cost £300. When I got back I priced up and the same deal would have cost me £600.
