In that place 2 people woman and a man were hurt while crossing traversing (very dangerously and without any regard for the conditions). They got lucky the man is with fractures after the incident and the woman with head injuries from hitting rocks but not life treatening .From the mountain rescue service are issuing warning for the whole of skiers/boarders and walkers to stick only to groomed runs and paths.Only yesterday the Mountain hut assistant from Mussala Hut above Borovets has died from falling into avalanche in the area of the North face of Markudjik Run(known as lawina-avalanche anyway) 5 hours after he was found cold. And even considering he is on the know with the conditions in the mountain.
From yesterday the warning is this:-between 10-50cm have fallen on a icy base which is looking for disaster if you try to venture OFF piste anywhere.
Respect the mountain .In the next few days the T’s will drop considerably so keep warm and don’t take chances.make sure you come back alive.

thanks for that Sam. As a new comer with very little experience having seen this and an earlier post about falling over the side and getting very little help, I am a bit worried about safety,. Is there anything my daughters and I should carry? We will be with instructors most of the time

Glynis as long as you stay on the piste you should be fine.

Sam - cheers for the heads up. I see that Banskoski.com has avalanche ratings up on the site these seem to have dropped from 'red' to 'yellow'. Any idea how these corespond to the 1-5 rating used in most of the Alps and is there anything on display in the resort?

Indeed it was fi2. I was shocked by some of the responses to it too - but I guess a lot of people really have no idea of the dangers of the mountain.

PLEASE ALL IN THE CONDITIONS AT PRESENT KEEP TO THE GROOMED AREAS ALL SHOW INVEST IN LOCATER TAGS THAT FIT INSIDE SKI SUITS. THESE ARE SMALL AND HELP IF YOU ARE BURRIED IN SNOW.

BE SAFE OUT THERE ENJOY DON'T BE STUPID AND RESPECT ALL MOUNTAIN AREAS

re: respect the mountain!avalanche!!

If you're talking about RECCO they're next to useless. You want proper transceivers, plus shovel & probes not transponders.

Sound advice Sam, as an experienced off piste skier, icy base and big dump of snow dont mix!
Not worth the chance.
